Siena Palio Jockey Hospitalized After Fan Crashlands Horse

Aug 26, 2026 •Sports

Siena's Palio di Siena horse race ended in chaos on Tuesday when a crowd of fans surged onto the track right after Jockey Giovanni Atzeni and his mount crossed the finish line. The pair had just won, but their victory lap turned dangerous as spectators ran directly into the animal's path. Video evidence captures the terrifying moment a spectator collided with the horse, causing it to tumble violently while Atzeni was thrown through the air.

Local media reports say the racehorse stood up immediately and escaped injury. However, Atzeni suffered a head wound and is currently hospitalized. His condition remains stable, but doctors will keep him under observation for several more days. This accident happens just days after another tragedy involving horses in Switzerland left one person dead and others hurt.

That second incident occurred Saturday near Val Roseg, close to the Italian border. A driver lost control of two carriages carrying about 40 people while traveling downhill through the woods. Police stated the driver noticed his brakes had failed on a steep stretch and tried to steer toward flatter ground to slow down. Unfortunately, one horse fell, causing the carriage to crash into a tree.

The collision threw passengers onto the path below. A 73-year-old woman lost her life in the wreck, and two others remain in serious condition. Emergency crews rushed to the scene with helicopters and ambulances. Photos show the wreckage of the carriages after they smashed against the tree trunk.

A police statement explained that braking power was insufficient on the sloping route before the driver attempted an emergency maneuver. Authorities have launched a full investigation into what happened. These events highlight how quickly things can go wrong when crowds invade racing tracks or drivers face mechanical failure in difficult terrain.
