Shooter Dead After Oregon Elementary School Shooting Spares Children

Oct 15, 2026 •Crime

A terrible shooting has left children among multiple victims at an elementary school in Oregon. The suspect was confirmed dead after police arrived on the scene.

Shots rang out at Silver Rail Elementary School just before 1pm. By 1:02pm, officers were already there. Moments later, the gunman was killed. It remains unclear exactly who fired the fatal shots, but officials suggested a bystander may have taken him down.

Paramedics set up an area outside the school. At least two people were rushed to a local hospital. The Bend-La Pine School District placed the campus on lockdown shortly after the incident began. Reports indicate that one class has already been released from the building.

Police are moving room by room to evacuate students. Sheila Miller, a spokeswoman for the department, said the school holds between 400 and 450 pupils plus more than 40 staff members. Those remaining inside will be transported by bus to an off-site reunification center. Parents have gathered at nearby Journey Church while officers manage the situation.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stated she is closely monitoring the developing story. She expressed gratitude for first responders and promised to share updates as information becomes available. FBI agents are now on the ground to assist with the investigation, according to Kash Patel. He confirmed that every resource would be made available to investigators.

The Bend Police Department said the suspect acted alone. This lone gunman was shot inside the school just after 1pm. Senator Jeff Merkley released a statement saying his heart is with the Bend community and all families affected. He noted that no one should fear violence at their schools.

Senator Chris McDaniel asked people to pray for the children, teachers, parents, and first responders rushing to help. He wrote on social media that mothers and fathers want nothing more than to hold their babies safely tonight. He prayed for protection over those children so they could be brought home.
