Security Officer Killed in Knife Attack in Amman, Jordan
A security officer is dead after a knife attack in Amman, Jordan’s capital. The violence unfolded on Thursday when an assailant struck a member of the Public Security Directorate with a sharp object. The victim died from the wounds. State media described the incident as a "cowardly terrorist attack."
The situation escalated quickly. According to Al-Mamlaka TV, the attacker tried to grab the weapon of the officer who had just been killed. Another security officer stepped in to stop him. Both the assailant and the intervening officer sustained injuries. Authorities arrested the attacker shortly after the scuffle.
Jordan’s Public Security Directorate released a preliminary finding. They stated the man had been planning to commit a terrorist act against officers of the General Security Directorate. Following the incident, emergency services transported the injured security officer to a hospital. The wounded assailant went with them. Investigators moved in to examine the circumstances surrounding the assault.
The location matters here. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman confirmed the attack occurred in its vicinity, according to the Associated Press. That proximity adds a layer of complexity to an already tense week for the country.
This incident follows a grim chapter just weeks prior. Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in southern Jordan. Nine people died in that shooting. Dozens more were wounded. It remains unclear if there is any link between the church attack and this latest stabbing in Amman.
King Abdullah addressed the nation on Monday. He declared that "terrorists" would not be permitted to threaten Jordan’s unity or security. His statement came after the deadly church attack triggered Jordanian military strikes inside Syria. The country is clearly on high alert.
