Scott McTominay Out Until October For Heart Surgery

Sep 1, 2026 •Sports

Napoli's former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay faces surgery to fix an irregular heartbeat. The Serie A club confirmed the news on Tuesday. They said a minor, benign arrhythmia developed and will require treatment. The operation uses pulsed field ablation, or PFA for short. This is a minimally invasive technique designed to handle heart rhythm issues.

McTominay won't play again until after the season's first international break. That means he sits out until October. He was sidelined during the second half of Napoli's 2-1 loss to Como on Sunday. The team announced this development early in his recovery process.

The 29-year-old helped Napoli win the title in 2025 and earned Serie A's MVP honors that year. He represented Scotland at the World Cup this year and remained a contender for the last Ballon d'Or. His international career spans 73 caps with 15 goals scored for his country.

McTominay came through the Manchester United youth system. He joined the first team during Alex Ferguson's tenure as manager. That seven-season stint ended before his move to Italy in 2024. Now he will focus on getting healthy and returning to the pitch later this year.
