Scientists create anti-AI Ghost Font to protect private text from robots

Artificial intelligence now lives inside fitness trackers and dating apps, making it harder than ever to know who truly reads your private messages. Scientists have found a solution by creating a new anti-AI font called the Ghost Font. This unique typeface writes text using motion instead of static ink on a page. Eric Lu, the developer behind the project, explained that it combines movement, video noise, and decoys to share secrets only with real people. Technically it is not a standard TTF file, but it serves as an experiment in writing formats that confuse even the smartest computer models.

The letters remain clear enough for a human eye to catch instantly, yet leading AI agents struggle to decode them when watching the video play. Mr Lu tested this by feeding recent artificial intelligence systems videos of the font and found they could not figure out the moving messages. His inspiration came from ZXX, a typeface designed in 2013 by Sang Mun that humans could read while optical character recognition software failed. Back then experts called it surveillance-proof, but modern AI bots have since learned to read text rendered in that older style easily.

To stop today's advanced bots, motion became the key defense mechanism for this new design. When you type a few words on his blog platform, the letters appear only because your eyes track the movement of the dots. If you pause the video frame by frame, those static dots blend into an unrecognizable mess that hides the embedded image completely. Taking a screenshot will not reveal the secret text because the message exists only within the flow of motion.

The system adds another layer of security through a sneaky decoy message that throws most AI bots off their track entirely. Mr Lu described this trick as a final defense for any determined agent trying to find hidden data inside a video file. The bot might locate the fake decoy first and assume it is the real message, leaving the actual text safe from view. This method successfully hides messages even from powerful thinking models like Fable and GPT Sol 5.6 Ultra which currently dominate the field.

Beyond being a fun digital toy, Mr Lu believes this technology could solve serious problems in CAPTCHA systems used online today. Most current verification tools are easily solved by automated bots that flood websites with spam requests every day. Using motion inside a video would make it much harder for an automated script to decipher while staying relatively easy for a human user to read naturally. However, as AI bots receive more technical updates and training data, it is likely only a matter of time before they can crack the code completely. Mr Lu admitted that while Ghost Font is hard for AI to read, it is also pretty hard for humans to read without seeing the motion play out in real time.

New AI models are closing the gap faster than many expected. Observers note that it will be interesting to see what the future holds when it comes to AI perception and multimodal models. Several social media users tested the font out this week – with mixed reviews. One person took to X and asked if this is the ultimate CAPTCHA. Another added they do not see the point of such efforts, even in the short run before AIs catch up. And one joked that the only downside is that it drives all who look upon it INSANE. These comments highlight a growing frustration among users facing automated systems designed to test human limits.
