Scientists confirm refrigeration makes chocolate taste better and snap sharper.

Scientists have finally resolved the long-standing argument over chocolate storage, confirming that refrigeration yields a superior product. Professor Charles Spence, an experimental psychology expert at the University of Oxford, asserts that chilled chocolate delivers a better taste and texture than room-temperature alternatives.

"Chilling chocolate not only boosts its flavour but also its texture," Spence stated. He explained that cold chocolate provides a sharper snap when broken, noting, "We like foods when they make some noise. One of the benefits of putting chocolate in the fridge is that you get a better snap when you break a fridge–cold bar."

This finding validates the preferences of many British consumers who actively store their treats in the refrigerator. On social media, advocates like one TikToker declared, "I don't want to shame anyone but I'm just saying, if you don't keep your Chocolate Digestives in the fridge, I don't want to associate with you."

Spence identified three distinct advantages to keeping chocolate cold. Beyond the satisfying snap, starting with a cold bar prolongs the melting sensation in the mouth, creating a slower, more indulgent experience. He added, "Taking foods from the fridge helps to connote the notion that they are fresh, and we all like fresh food." Additionally, lower temperatures dull extreme flavors like bitterness and sweetness, resulting in a more balanced bite where the creamy mouthfeel takes center stage.

Recent data supports this approach. A poll commissioned by Cadbury, involving 2,000 Brits, revealed that 80 percent of chocolate lovers already refrigerate their bars during summer months. Specifically, 69 percent chill chocolate to prevent rapid melting, while 51 percent do so to enjoy the crunch of a cold bar.

Michael Moore, Marketing Manager at Cadbury, commented on the passion surrounding the debate: "We know how passionate the nation is about the great 'fridge vs cupboard' debate. Which is why we're so excited to launch the new limited–edition Cadbury Dairy Milk Strawberries & Creme Frappe bar. It's a flavour that screams British summertime, and we've designed it to be the ultimate chilled treat – straight from the fridge."

This revelation arrives shortly after Spence explained the popularity of Dubai chocolate. He attributed its success to the vivid green color of its filling, creating a powerful visual contrast against the brown chocolate. "This makes it stand out in photographs and captures our attention since we are drawn to visually interesting objects," he said.
