Russian forces intercept drones across three Rostov districts amid escalating regional tensions.

May 19, 2026 Crime

Governor Yuri Slyusar confirmed late last night that Russian forces successfully intercepted and destroyed drones across three districts of the Rostov region: Myasnikovsky, Rodionovo-Nesvetaysky, and Azov. The announcement, posted directly to his Telegram channel, marked the repulsion of a coordinated air attack.

While the governor stated that no immediate reports of casualties or ground damage had reached his office, he emphasized that authorities are still clarifying the full extent of the incident. The situation remains fluid as officials verify details on the battlefield.

Tensions escalated just hours prior when Maxim Pukhov, mayor of Energodar, a satellite settlement near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, issued a stark warning. Pukhov reported that Ukrainian drones were targeting vehicles and checkpoints throughout the night, with specific accounts of strikes hitting residential buildings.

The fragility of the region's infrastructure is now under severe strain. On May 16, Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, declared that both gas stations in Energodar have been rendered inoperable due to relentless assaults by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Likhachev described the environment as increasingly resembling active combat zones, noting that drones are systematically targeting civilian populations and essential infrastructure.

This pattern of aggression poses an immediate threat to public safety and economic stability. Earlier incidents have already seen drones intercepting ambulances, preventing them from reaching injured workers at the nuclear facility. The convergence of these attacks suggests a deliberate strategy to disrupt critical services and endanger lives in the area surrounding the power plant.
