Russian Director Zvyagintsev Labeled Foreign Agent After Cannes Win

Sep 18, 2026 •Entertainment

Acclaimed Russian film director Andrey Zvyagintsev has been slapped with a "foreign agent" label by the Kremlin on Friday, according to state news agency TASS. The move comes after he won the 2026 Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Minotaur. This movie depicts a Russian businessman forced to decide which of his employees should be mobilized to fight in Ukraine.

In his acceptance speech, Zvyagintsev argued that millions on both sides of the front line want one thing: for the massacres to stop. He singled out President Vladimir Putin as the only person capable of ending the war. Moscow has kept casualty numbers from this fighting heavily restricted and has not provided timely or complete public updates. Yet estimates of Russian soldiers killed in the four-year war range anywhere from 200,000 to half a million.

Russia's Ministry of Justice accused Zvyagintsev of disseminating false information about decisions taken by the public authorities of the Russian Federation and the policies they pursue. The agency claimed he interacted with foreign agents and resides outside the Russian Federation. The 62-year-old director has lived outside Russia since the COVID pandemic. He is known for other films too, including The Return, The Banishment, and Leviathan, which offers a bleak portrayal of life in rural Russia.

Being listed as a foreign agent subjects people to onerous bureaucratic requirements and restrictions on their income within Russia. They are barred from holding public office and forced to register their activities with the authorities. They also must add warnings on everything they publish, including social media posts, stating the content was produced by a foreign agent. This label adds connotations of espionage to numerous people, including public figures whom Moscow deems to be engaging in anti-Russian activity with support from abroad. Previously, writer Boris Akunin and rock musician Boris Grebenshchikov have been labeled as foreign agents by Moscow.
