Russian couple arrested after rooftop stunt atop Empire State Building
Two individuals have been taken into custody following a provocative stunt atop the Empire State Building that blended a protest action with what appeared to be a marriage proposal in New York City.
Footage captured by a United States news helicopter on Wednesday depicted two figures clad in black sharing a kiss near the skyscraper's main antenna, roughly 443 metres (1,454 feet) above the ground. From their precarious perch, the pair unfurled a banner bearing the message: "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."
Authorities have since identified the arrested couple as Russian nationals Vanya Beerkus and Angela Nikolau. The duo, who serve as self-proclaimed ambassadors for "rooftopping," an unregulated climbing sport, featured prominently in a 2024 Netflix documentary titled *Skywalkers: A Love Story*. The film chronicled their shared passion for scaling city structures.

The specifics of how the pair accessed the antenna, which sits well above the building's publicly accessible levels, remain unclear. However, police body camera footage released later that day provided a glimpse into the confrontation. An officer, breathing heavily as he ascended a ladder to reach the couple, asked, "How are you doing?" Although the wind obscured the couple's response, the officer delivered the blunt reality: "Well, you can't be up here."
The controversy has drawn sharp reactions from various stakeholders. Dmitriy Nikolau, Angela's father and a Russian circus artist, expressed disbelief at the concern surrounding the climb. When approached by Reuters, he stated, "Why should I be worried? I climb up roofs myself." He further asserted that he believed it was normal to climb roofs in any country, including the United States, citing constitutional rights.
In contrast, the Empire State Building issued a firm rebuke, labeling the event an "unauthorized incident." A spokesperson for the landmark suggested the couple could have safely marked their engagement by purchasing the building's official $1,000 "Happily Ever Empire Proposal Package," rather than risking an illegal ascent.
