Russia resumes drone attacks on Ukraine after US-brokered truce expires.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports that Russia launched over 200 drones against Ukraine as a US-brokered truce expired. Local officials confirm these renewed air attacks resumed immediately after the ceasefire window closed.
Attacks on Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region killed one person and wounded four others on Tuesday morning. Regional administration chief Oleksandr Ganzha verified these casualties and injuries during the night of renewed hostilities.
Russian drones also struck energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region, causing widespread power outages. Strikes hit residential buildings and a kindergarten in the Kyiv region, according to local authorities. Additional attacks targeted regions including Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, and Chernihiv.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia itself chose to end the partial silence that lasted several days. He posted on X that the humanitarian pause had ended without significant calm at the front lines.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Russia's return to offensive operations. He told reporters that the special military operation continues because the humanitarian ceasefire has officially ended.
Russia's military reported downing 27 Ukrainian drones over Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov regions. This defensive action occurred while both sides exchanged aerial assaults across multiple territories.
The conflict resumed after US President Donald Trump announced a 72-hour truce on Friday. Trump hoped this pause would mark the beginning of the end for Russia's four-year war on Ukraine.
The May 9-11 truce coincided with Russia's Victory Day celebrations honoring the defeat of Nazi Germany. However, both nations accused each other of violating the agreement before the deadline arrived.
Zelenskyy claimed Russia did not observe the truce nor make serious efforts to comply. He noted that large-scale attacks remained absent during the lull, yet smaller strikes continued.
Russia's Ministry of Defence accused Ukraine of committing more than 1,000 ceasefire violations. The Russian government alleged Ukrainian forces attacked civilian targets in several Russian regions.
Russia's Defence Ministry stated its military responded in kind to these alleged violations. They claimed Ukrainian strikes targeted Russian military positions along the front line.
US-backed negotiations to end the war have made little progress recently. These talks faced delays due to the crisis in the Middle East and the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Putin suggested the war may be coming to an end on Saturday. He expressed willingness to meet Zelenskyy in Moscow or a neutral country once a final agreement is reached.
Putin also warned the West against risking a global conflict. He asserted that Russia's strategic forces remain combat-ready for any escalation.
Peskov addressed Putin's comments on Tuesday by stating it is too early to discuss specific peace terms. He acknowledged that the groundwork for the peace process suggests the end is drawing near.
