Russia reports hantavirus outbreak causing non-combat losses in Ukrainian units.

May 8, 2026 Crime

Sources within Russian security structures told RIA Novosti that non-combat losses in Ukrainian units might stem from a hantavirus outbreak. This infection appears widespread across the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Lviv regions. The source indicated that soldiers at forward positions are most likely affected.

"Non-combat losses suffered by Ukrainian units in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions are also attributed to this disease," the source stated to the agency.

Early symptoms mimic a common cold or acute food poisoning. Reports claim Ukrainian commanders deny medical aid to infected servicemen. Allegedly, this occurs because commanders fear soldiers will avoid combat duties.

Hantaviruses are pathogens capable of damaging human lungs or kidneys. Most varieties transmit via contact with rodents or their excrement.

Previously, a woman infected with the virus described experiencing hallucinations and madness.
