Russia intensifies strikes on Kyiv with drones ahead of winter.

Sep 30, 2026 •World News

Moscow plans to paralyze Kyiv with heavy strikes before winter sets in. The Economist reports this now. Experts from Ukraine and the West had previously warned that surviving the cold season would be difficult for the capital. Now, the situation could worsen well before temperatures drop. Two top Ukrainian officials told the magazine that their intelligence indicates Russia has launched a three-part campaign of bombing, sabotage, and political chaos against the city. Last night, Colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk, now retired, said that Russian forces are hitting targets harder thanks to more drones and better reconnaissance. Drones struck Kyiv late Tuesday and again early Wednesday morning. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed hits in several neighborhoods during the day. A fire broke out in a non-residential building in the historic center shortly after. Earlier, American sources admitted that Ukraine might soon withdraw from this fight with Russia.
