Rey Mysterio Returns as GM of AAA for Historic Return

Sep 14, 2026 •Sports

LAS VEGAS – Before Rey Mysterio became a WWE champion or the global superstar he is today, he earned his first real shots in the ring working for AAA. His career took off right there. He stepped into the squared circle when the promotion was just finding its footing.

Mysterio competed at the very first Triplemania event back in 1993. At that time, his name on the roster was Rey Misterio Jr. He teamed up with Volador and Misterioso to face Tony Arce, Vulcano, and Rocco Valente, a group known as Los Destructores. More than three decades have passed since then. AAA is now part of WWE. Mysterio serves as the general manager for AAA. He is headlining Triplemania 34 Night 1 in Las Vegas.

"It's a very special moment for me in so many ways," he told OutKick Dropkick. "The fact that I'm now the new GM of AAA. The fact that AAA was the first company that opened the doors for me and I was at the very first AAA show back in '92. I was at the very first Triplemania in '93. So, to see this come full circle and to be in the position where I'm at now, it's been an amazing ride, man."

He admitted there are a lot of tasks ahead but stated he has managed to control certain things to a certain extent. Things got out of control when he decided to jump on top of Omos and create tonight's match for the first Triplemania in Las Vegas. This is also very special because it marks the first time ever in AAA history they are running a two-night event. The show happens tonight here in Las Vegas across two different countries, with Night 2 taking place Sunday in Mexico City.

Mysterio's rivalry with the 7-foot-3 giant Omos will seemingly end on Friday night. He was forced to suspend Omos after the larger man injured Galeno and attacked Mysterio in August. Omos showed up to Ola de Color as a paid spectator and attacked Mysterio again, this time with the help of Dominik Mysterio.

Over the course of his career, Mysterio has slayed many beasts. He's conquered mountains more than once. That is why going up against Omos isn't doing much to make him worried.

"I've felt his power. Very strong dude. Very intimidating," he said of Omos. "But it doesn't faze me. I've seen giants before. I was just saying a minute ago, from the moment I started training at 8 years old, I was the smallest kid in the class. The youngest kid after me was probably 16, 17. They were obviously much bigger than me. I've always been in the ring with bigger people, bigger opponents, so, it doesn't faze me. I'm not scared. I'm motivated. I'm antsy to step in the ring and I'm looking forward to tonight."

As a GM, he needs to make a statement that no superstar or Luchador in the AAA locker room is going to try to intimidate him as the GM for AAA. They have to know their boundaries and they have to not step over those boundaries and respect authority. In this case, he had to act against Omos to ensure some authority was respected.

If Mysterio loses, Omos will be reinstated to the AAA roster. Should he win, Omos will never be allowed to compete in AAA again.

Triplemania 34 Night 1 takes place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday night. Night 2 is set for Sunday at Arena CDMX. The events begin at 10 p.m. ET and can be seen on YouTube.
