Rescuers free tiny fox stuck in drainpipe for nine hours

Sep 9, 2026 •World News

A tiny fox cub spent nine long hours stuck deep inside a drainpipe before rescuers finally pulled him free in Humberston, Lincolnshire. Residents heard strange barks coming from beneath a street grate on Sunday afternoon and immediately called the fire department. Firefighters confirmed the animal was wedged two feet underground within a wastewater pipe just 10cm wide. They could not reach the creature directly, so they summoned Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue along with Anglian Water engineers and veterinarians for help.

The little fox, whom rescuers named Valor, had crawled through roughly 300 meters of underground piping before getting stuck in that narrow trap. Engineers deployed thermal imaging cameras and probes to locate his exact position while the team dug relentlessly for over nine hours until a gap opened up wide enough to gently pull him out. The cub sustained multiple wounds during his ordeal but is expected to make a full recovery after necessary surgery.

A spokesperson for Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue explained that neighbors found Valor by listening and looking through grates on the street drain. They had already tried lifting covers to help him escape, yet it was obvious he could not free himself without aid. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service arrived first but were forced to stop their attempt before Anglian Water took over the operation.

The team posted updates on Facebook describing how they paused briefly to brainstorm ideas with everyone involved before working methodically through each solution. Eventually, enough space opened for the fox to extend his head and neck, though he still could not break free completely. The lead rescuer reached inside the pipework and found that behind the opening lay a sudden drop. He also discovered the cub's front legs were jammed against something solid.

Workers lowered the water level even further in the drain until they saw the fox standing upright with his front end, looking much like an old pillory post used for public humiliation. The exhausted animal may have been trapped inside that dark tunnel for several days before anyone heard his cries on Sunday. This dramatic rescue highlights how vulnerable small creatures become when they wander into human infrastructure and underscores the importance of community action in saving wildlife from such hidden dangers.
