Reform UK Surges in Local Elections, Delivering Major Blow to Labour Government

Glasgow, United Kingdom – Local council elections in England have delivered a severe blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party. The hard right has secured sweeping gains, marking a humiliating defeat for the government.

Although some results from Thursday's municipal poll remain uncounted, the populist Reform UK party has surged ahead. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, stated his party is wiping out Labour in many of their most traditional areas.

At the time of this report, Labour has lost control of 35 councils and more than 1,300 seats in England. Conversely, Reform UK has secured over 1,350 seats and taken control of 13 councils.

James Mitchell, a professor at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science, told Al Jazeera that Reform UK will celebrate these results. However, he warned they must now focus on the difficult task of governing.

"Gaining a base in local government can be an important base from which to mount a challenge at the next election, but it comes with confronting and dealing with problems," Mitchell noted. Much will depend on how Reform UK performs in local administration.

The Labour Party, traditionally on the left, has shifted right under Starmer's leadership. Since battering the Conservatives in the 2024 general election, the party has faced continuous political troubles.

Starmer has dealt with internal challenges to his authority following backbench rebellions. The fallout from his appointment of Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to Washington has further damaged his standing.

This latest setback will sharpen the knives within Labour against Starmer. Mitchell says hundreds of MPs risk losing their jobs in the next election, expected by 2029.

"Keir Starmer's authority had been damaged before these elections," Mitchell said. "There must come a point when the self-interest of Labour MPs make a challenge [to his premiership] happen." Recovery becomes less likely with each defeat.

While Reform UK emerges as the clear winner, the Liberal Democrats and Green Party are also making inroads. The Greens, led by Zack Polanski since 2025, made modest gains but view them as a springboard for national growth.

Nick Hartley, a Newcastle-based Green Party councillor, told Al Jazeera that Green politics is grassroots and community focused. He contrasted this with Reform UK, which he described as being backed by billionaires and focused on taking power for the top.

"Reform UK, backed by billionaires and speaking from podiums, are all about taking power for the top. They do not have our communities at their heart," Hartley said.

Green voters remain deeply troubled by Reform UK's anti-immigration platform. Days before the elections, Reform pledged to establish migrant detention centres in areas controlled by the Greens if they win the next general election.

A Green Party supporter in Yorkshire told Al Jazeera that Reform's rhetoric is designed to be incendiary and divisive. The rise of such parties poses a significant risk to community cohesion and local governance stability.

In a stark assessment of the current political climate, a voice of dissent emerged, declaring that the values represented by the opposition do not align with personal convictions. The critique was sharp, suggesting that despite a loud rhetoric filled with empty promises, the party in question lacks substantive policy frameworks to back them up.

Amidst this internal turmoil within the Labour Party as Keir Starmer battles to retain his leadership, the landscape is being reshaped by seismic shifts in England. As the nation's largest constituent country, home to over 80 percent of the UK's population, England has become the primary theater for these changes. Reform UK has surged to prominence, positioning itself at the heart of a volatile domestic political environment that demands immediate attention.

Tim Bale, a distinguished politics professor at Queen Mary University of London, provided crucial context to Al Jazeera, noting that the election results validate months of polling data. His observation underscores a reality where the electorate's sentiments have moved in direct line with the party's rising influence.

The implications are profound for the structure of British governance. Reform UK has effectively taken the lead in an increasingly fragmented multiparty system. More critically, they have established themselves as the dominant force on the right flank of British politics, successfully unseating both Conservative and Labour representatives in numerous constituencies. This realignment signals a significant risk to the stability of existing community alliances and challenges the traditional two-party dominance that has long defined the region.
