Rare Oceanic Manta Ray Spotted Feeding Off Long Island

Aug 26, 2026 •US News

An unusual visitor made waves off Long Island last week when an oceanic manta ray was seen feeding near Jones Beach State Park. Video footage captured the massive marine animal swimming close to shore, drawing eyes to a creature that rarely appears in these northern waters. These rays typically call tropical and subtropical seas home, not the cooler currents of New York.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation clarified that while warm summer months occasionally allow this species to be spotted here, they are not regular residents. The DEC noted via Facebook that sightings depend on those specific seasonal conditions. Manta rays filter feed with huge mouths designed to consume significant amounts of zooplankton. They can also venture into deeper water searching for medium-sized fish when the opportunity arises.

This oceanic manta ray holds the title of the largest species of ray in the world and isn't considered a threat to humans. Officials stated these animals can weigh more than 4,000 pounds and live as long as 40 years. Despite their enormous size, they pose no danger to people.
