A rare encounter with two massive oarfish washing ashore in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas has reignited ancient folklore surrounding the creatures, known in Japanese culture as 'Doomsday fish.' The sighting, witnessed by American tourists Monica Pittenger and her sister Katie in late February 2026, has sparked renewed speculation about whether the event signals a warning of natural disasters. The pair described the moment as a once-in-a-billion chance encounter, a claim that aligns with scientific records of the oarfish's elusive nature. These creatures, which typically dwell in the deep ocean's 'Twilight zone'—a region more than 3,000 feet below the surface—rarely appear on land, making the occurrence of two such sightings at once nearly unprecedented.

Oarfish, often referred to as sea serpents, have long held a place in myth and legend. In Japan, they are believed to be messengers from the sea god's palace, and their appearance on shore has historically been interpreted as an omen of impending cataclysms such as earthquakes or tsunamis. This belief dates back at least to the 17th century, with records of such sightings preceding major seismic events. The encounter began with a strange flash in the shallow waves, which Pittenger and her sister initially mistook for something artificial. As they approached, they realized they were looking at two enormous, shimmering beings with long, ribbon-like bodies and a distinctive red dorsal fin. Both oarfish were alive but clearly distressed, flapping desperately as they struggled to return to the water. Pittenger recounted how her sister, unable to stand by as the creatures suffered, dove into the surf without hesitation, despite the uncertainty of what they were dealing with. Other beachgoers joined in, helping to push the first oarfish back into the ocean, where it quickly regained strength and disappeared into the depths.

The second creature followed soon after, its movements synchronized with the first. Both fish were approximately 30 feet long and nearly two feet in height, measurements consistent with adult oarfish, which can grow up to 36 feet and weigh nearly 600 pounds. Despite their size, the animals appeared to be in relatively good health, suggesting that their stranding may have been the result of environmental factors rather than illness or injury. This raises further questions, as oarfish typically only wash ashore when they are sick, dying, or injured, making the Cabo San Lucas event a true enigma.

Pittenger described the experience as surreal, emphasizing the rarity of the event. 'It was something out of a fiction movie,' she said in an interview with the YouTube channel We Love Animals. 'We've researched how rare it is to see two of them at the same time—it's like a one-in-a-billion chance.' The couple's actions in rescuing the fish have since drawn attention from marine biologists, who note the importance of such interventions in protecting rare species. While the event has fueled folklore about impending disasters, scientific consensus remains cautious, emphasizing the need for further research to understand the ecological and behavioral patterns of oarfish.
