Qatar Emir Urges Diplomacy Over War Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Sep 22, 2026 •World News

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani addressed the United Nations General Assembly with an urgent call for diplomacy as the Gulf faces what he describes as one of its most dangerous phases. The Emir blamed years of delayed diplomatic efforts on the outbreak of war between the US and Israel against Iran, arguing that this conflict can only be resolved through serious negotiation. He stated clearly that reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation is essential for averting a broader regional war. Qatar remains convinced it can solve the crisis using these peaceful means while staying steadfast in defending its own territory and sovereignty.

The Emir called for a new regional system of collective security, noting that without such a structure, wars become possible. He argued that the current conflict in Iran is simply the cumulative result of postponing diplomatic resolutions over time. This lack of stability has allowed attacks to expand beyond borders and affect the security of neighboring countries as a whole. There can be no talk of a just international order while Palestine remains in its plight according to his remarks at the assembly.

Sheikh Tamim went further by stating that what happened in Gaza is genocide in every sense of the word. He slammed Israel for its aggression in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, linking these actions directly to the wider regional instability. His speech also expressed strong support for Lebanon, Sudan, and Libya while calling firmly for the preservation of state sovereignty everywhere. Regarding Yemen specifically, he supported UN efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political settlement based on the outcomes of national dialogue facilitated by the United Nations. These goals include preserving Yemen's unity and achieving security and stability for all involved parties.
