Premature infant dies weeks after mother killed in San Diego shooting

A premature infant girl has died following the brutal murder of her 17-year-old mother in California. The tragedy unfolded when Jariah Edwards was shot to death by her boyfriend, Trevon Williams, outside their rental home in San Diego.

Edwards, who was eight months pregnant, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head just after 1 am on May 30 in the Bay Park neighborhood. Police responded immediately to reports of gunfire at the property on Gardena Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene around 1 am to find the teenager unresponsive. Medical teams rushed her to the hospital for lifesaving efforts, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Prosecutors also charge him with possession or transportation of a machine gun and discharging a firearm. Police noted that Williams had driven across state lines to visit Edwards before the attack.

Deputy District Attorney Alex Lorens noted that the couple, who began dating in September 2025, had a volatile relationship marked by domestic violence and threats against the unborn child.

At the time of the murder, the victim had reportedly blocked Williams's phone number and was preparing to file for a restraining order. Investigators discovered that Williams used a Lyft service to reach her location and subsequently ordered two DoorDash deliveries to lure her outside the residence.

According to court testimony, Williams allegedly waited near the home until the victim, enticed by a bouquet of flowers, stepped outside. He then ambushed her and discharged a firearm into her head. Lorens further alleged that the suspect made audio recordings admitting to the act, stating in one instance, "I shot this ----- in the face. On God, I shot this ----- dead." Another recording reportedly included the phrase, "I just killed my baby mama fool. They're looking for me right now."

Following the attack, Williams fled to a nearby canyon before police located him around 3:00 a.m. in a local neighborhood. Officers arrested him and recovered the weapon, which prosecutors described as a machine gun with an extended magazine. Lorens explained that while such a firearm was legal in Arizona, it is prohibited in San Diego.

Williams has entered a not guilty plea to all charges and faces a bail review hearing scheduled for June 12. Prosecutors indicated that the case carries the possibility of the death penalty. Although cameras were permitted during the arraignment, the judge prohibited the display of Williams's face in the media.

The victim's family attended court but declined to speak with reporters. Her sister, Jaidyn Edwards, posted a tribute on social media promising to care for the unborn child. A close friend, Jamila Corley, told KNXV that the baby represents the last part of the victim left behind while the suspect remains in custody.
