Pool pump failure releases toxic gas, hospitalizing over 60 tourists at Costa del Sol resort.

More than sixty tourists ended up in a hospital after breathing toxic gas while swimming at a Costa del Sol hotel. The trouble started when a pump at their pool failed. Dozens of holidaymakers received medical care at the unnamed property in Benahavis, near Marbella. Authorities are still looking into what happened today.

A regional official told local press that a circuit breaker on the pressure pump tripped. That system normally injects chlorine and acid into the water. When it stopped working, the chlorine and pH controls failed while other gases kept leaking out. Kids and older people were among those rushed to Marbella's Costa del Sol Hospital, according to Malaga-based paper Sur. Guests from the UK were part of the group taken away.

The pool was sealed off immediately for maintenance. It had been closed the day before, but nobody knew by morning if it would open again today. Workers from a public health and clinical lab in the Malaga TechPark arrived within forty-five minutes to run tests. They check swimming pools and drinking water, plus food for dangerous bacteria like E.coli and Salmonella.

This is not the first time such a disaster struck. In July 2022, a huge chlorine leak at the Sea Club Hotel in Alcudia on Majorca poisoned over twenty people, including children. Victims suffered vomiting, itchy skin, and breathing trouble. Health workers gave oxygen to some guests right there in the hotel garden.

These accidents happen when water chemistry goes wrong. If chlorine levels or pH drift off balance, toxic chemicals form that hurt eyes, lungs, and stomachs. The risk to families on vacation is real. Government rules about pool safety could save lives if they are enforced strictly. A broken pump might seem minor until gas fills the air and people get sick fast.
