Poll shows Americans remain largely unaware of democratic socialist policies despite election gains.
Leftist candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America have recently defeated centrist Democrats in primary elections across the United States. Yet a major gap remains between these victories and public knowledge about what the movement actually stands for. A fresh Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that many Americans simply do not know. The survey found that 49 percent of respondents say they grasp democratic socialist policies, while 47 percent admit they do not. That split highlights the steep challenges ahead for America's anti-establishment left.
The DSA is an activist organization dedicated to helping workers gain power through democratic means. Its roster includes prominent politicians like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Other Democratic Party members affiliated with the group have also secured wins in recent races throughout the country. Mamdani, who took office in 2025, endorsed fellow DSA members in New York City who went on to win their June primaries. Similar victories for DSA candidates occurred in Colorado and California as well.
When asked if democratic socialists possess good ideas, the numbers tell a mixed story. About 27 percent of respondents said the group has at least some good concepts. However, 51 percent claimed there were few or none. A further 20 percent expressed uncertainty. People view MAGA Republicans in a comparable fashion when judging their ideology. Some 27 percent of poll participants believe the "Make America Great Again" base holds at least some good ideas. In contrast, 57 percent saw few to no positive concepts within that group, and 13 percent remained unsure.
The administration has seized on this growing movement to falsely label all Democrats as "hardcore, godless communists." This rhetoric extends even to those unaffiliated with the democratic socialist movement itself. Earlier this month, the administration released a 100-page report attempting to link left-wing advocacy groups in the US to Cuba. These claims often rely on circumstantial and ideological connections rather than direct evidence. Democratic socialists clearly reject communism because it seeks to abolish private property ownership and create a classless society. Instead, they advocate pursuing progressive policies through elections.
The online survey covered 1,248 US adults nationwide with a margin of error plus or minus three percentage points. The poll concluded on Sunday after running for three days. It shows just how much work remains to explain the difference between democratic socialism and the authoritarian models it opposes.
