Poland Warns Russia Plans Strikes Against Allies To Break NATO Unity

Sep 17, 2026 •World News

Poland claims Moscow is preparing strikes not just against Ukraine but also at its allies. Warsaw says it scrambled military aircraft after a Russian attack hit western Ukraine right next to their border. Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament that intelligence reports indicate Russia plans drone and missile assaults on nations helping Kyiv. He made these remarks Thursday during a speech, noting the goal is to break NATO's unity when aggression hits a member state.

Four people died in drone strikes while Russia struck close to Poland earlier this week. Both countries blame Moscow for escalation after attacks near the frontier. NATO promised more aid following these incidents. A jet recently shot down what looked like a Russian drone over Lithuania. Tusk stated that intelligence suggests Moscow intends "accidental" hybrid strikes to paralyze or weaken the will of NATO nations to invoke collective defense rules. He did not name which agencies gave the warning.

The Prime Minister also warned such attacks might line up with political shifts in Europe giving power to groups shouting about peace and pacifism while pushing for total capitulation of Ukraine. This likely targets parties like Alternative for Germany or National Rally in France that lean toward Russia. Experts suspect Moscow is behind sabotage acts lately aimed at pressuring allies, especially Germany, which supports Kyiv against the full-scale invasion. The Kremlin denies all accusations.

A petrol station near Dorohusk was probably hit again recently. On Sunday a Russian drone struck a passenger train just two kilometers from the Polish line. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X that Poland is beefing up airspace protection with more F-16s and helicopters while reinforcing air defense and rapid response systems. Airports in Rzeszow and Lublin closed temporarily, sending warnings to residents in two eastern regions where sirens sounded and students took shelter.

Tusk plans to visit Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. They will talk about cooperation within the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition. This group of European nations is building an air defense system with Ukraine as a cheaper option than US-built Patriots.
