Plane Crash Near Fresno Kills 2 Children, Injures 2 Adults

Sep 6, 2026 •US News

Two children lost their lives while two adults remain critically injured after a small plane plummeted near the San Joaquin River in California. The single-engine aircraft went down just before 2pm PDT on Saturday, sparking chaos at the Sierra Sky Park Airport in Fresno and briefly cutting power to the surrounding area. Witnesses and reporters captured footage of dozens of firefighters battling thick smoke billowing from a large bluff deep within the wilderness.

Fresno Fire Department Officer Josh Sellers told the press that the plane struck off a cliff near the runway, though officials did not know if it was taking off or landing when disaster struck. The sheriff's office confirmed that crews worked frantically to douse the flames and stop them from reaching nearby homes. Four people were on board. Two children died at the scene, while two adults were rushed to a local hospital and listed in critical condition as Saturday night fell.

No names, ages, or family ties for the victims have been released yet. A safety perimeter now surrounds the crash site, blocking public access. PG&E says power has returned to nearby residences after the brief outage caused by the collision. The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed it is launching an investigation into the accident. They identified the wreckage as a Grumman American Avn. Corp. AA-5, a four-seat, single-engine aircraft.

"This is a rare and tragic situation in northwest Fresno," said Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi in a statement on social media. "My immediate concern is for the survivors of this heart wrenching situation." He added that his office will reach out to those impacted once timing allows. Karbassi thanked first responders and city manager staff for their fast reaction, asking the community to pray for the family facing something unimaginable.

The crash happened near Sierra Sky Park, a neighborhood billed as the world's first aviation community. The area is built around a privately owned airport where houses line the runway and feature aircraft hangars instead of garages. Emergency responders extinguished the fire before it could spread to those homes. The cause remains under investigation while power has since returned to the region.
