Patrick Vieira Named New Senegal Coach Ahead Of AFCON Qualifiers

Aug 26, 2026 •Sports

Patrick Vieira has officially been named the new head coach of Senegal as the pressure mounts ahead of their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This appointment ends the tenure of Pape Thiaw, who was let go after a controversial period for the national team.

The 50-year-old Vieira hails from Dakar and spent his playing career representing France. He famously stood on the podium to lift the World Cup trophy with Les Bleus in 1998. His journey took him through Cannes, a successful stint in Serie A at AC Milan, and then to Arsenal where he won three Premier League titles between 1996 and 2005 under Arsene Wenger. He later moved to Juventus, Inter Milan, and finished his career at Manchester City in 2011.

Thiaw led the Lions of Teranga to victory on the pitch during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. That title was eventually stripped away following a walk-off incident mid-game by Senegalese players and staff, with the trophy handed to Morocco instead. Thiaw also faced heavy criticism after his side lost in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, leading to his dismissal.

The Senegalese Football Federation called Vieira's hiring a "strategic move" designed to build a high-level technical setup that matches their sporting goals. Vieira previously coached in Major League Soccer for New York City FC and returned to France with Nice before taking short stints at Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa.

His next official duties are clear: Senegal will face Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers starting September 21, 2026. The Confederation of African Football has not yet released the full group schedule, but these opponents loom large on the horizon.

The situation feels urgent for a nation still trying to reclaim its honor. The federation plans to appeal the decision that stripped their title from CAF and handed it to Morocco. They intend to take this case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport while waiting for Vieira's official presentation date, which will be announced separately. Can this legendary midfielder restore pride to a country that still insists on winning back what was taken?
