Over 2,000 Palestinian Children Held Without Charges by Israel
A new report reveals a grim reality inside Israeli detention facilities where Palestinian children face severe hardship. More than two thousand minors have been held by Israeli forces since the conflict erupted in October 2023, according to the Palestinian Prisoner's Society. At least three hundred and fifty of these young detainees are currently enduring harsh conditions within prison walls.
The rights group released its findings on Wednesday to highlight an escalating pattern of targeting children. They argue that holding minors without charges or a set release date creates deep uncertainty for families. This practice strips kids of their educational stability and severs vital family bonds. The organization describes this approach as another serious violation and crime.
Recent arrests show the situation is active and dangerous. On Tuesday, Israeli troops rounded up at least six children from Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Details remain murky regarding Gaza specifically because thousands of people are missing or have vanished under enforced disappearance policies there.
Inside these prisons, abuses range from intimidation to torture and starvation. The report details how denial of healthcare leaves victims vulnerable to infection and illness. One heartbreaking case involves fifteen-year-old Mohammed Hamid, who contracted scabies while held at Ofer Prison. He suffered severe infections that required heart surgery and ICU care before losing a leg entirely.
Another tragic story belongs to seventeen-year-old Walid Ahmed, who died in Megiddo Prison after six months of confinement. His death occurred in March 2025 despite evidence suggesting starvation played a role. An Israeli judge stopped the investigation into his cause of death in December because officials could not establish a definitive reason for his passing.
The prison system also holds American citizens alongside Palestinian children without charges. Ahmed shared a cell with Mohammed Ibrahim, a teenager from Florida who eventually secured freedom thanks to advocacy groups and lawmakers. This was not an isolated incident involving foreign nationals. Israeli forces abducted Abdalkareem Issa Ahmed Safi during a late-night raid in June on his West Bank home. Authorities moved him into the adult section of Ofer Prison after he turned eighteen while still incarcerated.
Similar actions targeted sixteen-year-old Adam Wajeh Abdelfattah Karakrah, another American citizen arrested in July. His family arranged bail for an August release, yet officials abruptly reversed that decision. The Palestinian Prisoner's Society is now demanding real international action to stop these arbitrary detentions and end the torture and neglect inside Israeli prisons.
Over two hundred and fifty thousand Palestinians face detention across the West Bank and Gaza since Israel launched its war in October 2023.
