OpenAI Introduces Locked Chats: PIN-Protection for Sensitive AI Conversations
Ever handed over your phone to show a friend a photo, only to panic about what else they might scroll through? That anxiety hits hard when your ChatGPT history holds sensitive details, from personal struggles to surprise party plans. OpenAI just rolled out Locked Chats, a feature designed to keep those specific threads hidden. You can now protect individual conversations with a four-digit PIN. On compatible devices, Face ID, Touch ID, or your standard phone unlock method works too.
This feels like a necessary step, especially as more people rely on AI for personal advice. But before you start locking down every thread, understand the privacy limitations. The mechanics are straightforward. Once locked, a chat moves to a separate area under Projects > Locked chats. It vanishes from your regular history, pinned lists, and standard search results. The title and contents stay behind that PIN until you decide to open them. You can even continue the conversation later without pulling it back into your main feed.
Consider how helpful this is if you share a computer with a spouse or let a colleague use your laptop. Maybe you are researching an anniversary gift and don't want the details flashing in the sidebar. Now you have a clean way to keep that separate. There is one critical catch, though. If you already use ChatGPT Projects, locking a conversation removes it from that specific project. The chat loses access to those project-specific instructions, files, and memory. Unlocking it later sends it back to your regular history, not its original project.
The rollout is gradual. It covers ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. The feature works on the web, in iPhone and Android apps, and in the new desktop apps for Mac and Windows. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT for Healthcare does not support Locked Chats.
Setting it up takes just a few steps. The process looks similar whether you are on a computer, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Google Pixel. If you don't see the "Lock chat" option, the feature may not have reached your account yet. Some conversation types simply cannot be locked.
Here is the sequence: 1. Open ChatGPT and sign in. 2. Find the conversation you want to protect. 3. Tap the three-dot menu (•••). 4. Select "Lock chat." 5. Confirm by selecting "Lock chat" again. 6. If this is your first time, choose "Create a PIN." 7. Enter a four-digit PIN. 8. Re-enter the PIN to confirm.
Your conversation will now sit in Locked chats. The PIN belongs to your OpenAI account, meaning you can use the same code across supported devices where you are signed in. This adds a layer of control, but remember that no digital lock is perfect. Be mindful of shoulder surfing when entering that PIN in public spaces.
Not every chat type allows locking. This limitation matters if you expect total control over every digital interaction.
OpenAI has rolled out biometric authentication for ChatGPT locked chats. No more typing the same four-digit PIN repeatedly. That routine can wear down even the most patient user. On compatible iPhones, Face ID or Touch ID handles the verification. Android users on Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel devices get a similar device unlock feature.
Here is how to set up biometric access on an iPhone:
Open the ChatGPT app. Navigate to the sidebar and tap your profile icon to reach Settings. Select Security and login. Tap Account PIN. Toggle on Use Face ID or Use Touch ID, provided your hardware supports it. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish enabling authentication.
Your four-digit account PIN stays available as a backup method. You can now use supported biometric authentication to access locked conversations on that specific iPhone.

Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel users follow a slightly different path inside the ChatGPT app. The exact authentication method depends on your phone's configuration.
Open the ChatGPT app. Go to Projects. Select Locked chats. Enter your four-digit PIN when requested. Select Use device unlock when prompted, if available. Follow your phone's instructions to enable authentication.
Once enabled, you can use your supported device unlock method to access protected conversations. Depending on your phone, that may include fingerprint recognition or another available authentication method.
This setting applies only to the device where you enable it. Turning on device authentication on your Galaxy or Pixel does not automatically enable it on another phone.
Accessing a locked ChatGPT conversation requires a few simple steps. Open ChatGPT. Go to Projects. Select Locked chats. Enter your four-digit PIN or use supported device authentication. Select the conversation you want to reopen.
You can continue chatting as you normally would. Opening the conversation temporarily gives you access without permanently removing its protection. You can also start a brand-new conversation directly inside Locked chats. After opening that area with your PIN, simply enter a new message. It will remain in the protected section.
However, there is a limitation worth knowing. OpenAI doesn't allow you to archive, pin, move or share a conversation while it is locked. You'll need to permanently unlock it before using those options. Anyone who can open a locked conversation can also copy its contents.
Will ChatGPT lock your conversations again automatically? Yes, although the timing depends on your device. On iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel, OpenAI says access ends automatically after you've been away from a locked chat or the Locked chats area for one minute. The same one-minute rule applies when the app runs in the background.
On the web, refreshing the page or closing the tab ends access. The desktop and web versions also relock after you've been away from the authorized window. If you want to secure everything immediately, select Lock now.
There is another detail worth knowing. A conversation may remain visible in the browser tab immediately after you lock it. Similarly, another device that's already running ChatGPT might temporarily display an older conversation title until it refreshes. So, check your screen before handing over your device.
You may eventually decide that a conversation no longer needs extra protection.

Restoring a locked conversation is straightforward. You don't need to wipe your history to do it. Just head to Projects and tap Locked chats. Your phone will ask for your PIN or biometric confirmation. Find the specific thread you want back. Hit the three-dot menu in the corner. On iPhone, it says Unlock on iPhone; elsewhere, it’s just Unlock chat. Confirm the choice. The conversation snaps back into your regular feed. Eventually, it becomes searchable again like any other message.
But here is the part that demands your full attention. Locking a chat stops someone from casually scrolling through your history. That’s it. OpenAI is explicit: this feature does not create an end-to-end encrypted vault. It does not alter how long your data sits on their servers. Your existing Improve the model for everyone setting stays exactly as it was.
Memory adds another layer of complexity. If ChatGPT stored a fact before you locked the thread, that piece of information likely still lives in your standard Memory. New details you mention after locking stay within the Locked Chats memory area. Other locked threads can access those new notes. Regular chats cannot. However, locked chats can still pull from your existing regular Memory if you have it enabled.
There is a trap waiting for anyone who shares links. If you previously generated a public link to a conversation, locking that chat does not kill the link. Anyone holding that URL can still read the content. You must delete the shared link manually to cut off access.
Files carry their own risks. Documents you upload inside a locked chat get the same protection as the text. Files already sitting in your ChatGPT Space or synced from other services keep their original permissions. Locking the chat won’t shield those separate files.
Workplace accounts face different rules. Organizational retention and compliance policies still apply. OpenAI notes that Enterprise and Edu logs can include locked chats via compliance tools. Your workspace admin cannot unlock your chats or reset your PIN. But authorized compliance systems may still access that data.
These limitations matter if you are handling sensitive financial details. I would still avoid pasting passwords, Social Security numbers, or full banking credentials into a general ChatGPT conversation.
If you want to stop OpenAI from training on your new chats, there is another setting to check. Turning off Improve the model for everyone prevents your new conversations from feeding their AI models. This applies to personal accounts. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace content is not used for training by default.
Here is how to change it.
On the web: Sign in to ChatGPT. Click your profile icon. Select Settings. Click Data controls. Find Improve the model for everyone. Toggle it off. Click Done.
On iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Google Pixel: Open the app. Tap the sidebar. Hit your profile icon to reach Settings. Select Data controls. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
Once you flip that switch, your new conversations are safe from training use. They will still sit in your chat history, though. You will need Locked Chats or another method to hide them from view. For broader privacy controls across other AI services, look into opting out of data collection in popular apps.

OpenAI already bundles a feature called Temporary Chat. It handles a different job. Those chats vanish from your standard history. They do not spawn new memories. While marked temporary, OpenAI excludes them from model training. The company may retain those conversations for up to 30 days for safety checks. Your settings might still let a Temporary Chat tap into existing personalization data.
Locked Chats serve a different need. You want to save a conversation. You want to return to it later. But you do not want it exposed in your normal history. Keep adding messages. The conversation stays behind your PIN.
One-time discussion? Temporary Chat wins. Working through something personal over several days? Locked Chats offer extra access protection.
Here is the detail most people miss. Resetting a forgotten PIN permanently deletes all locked chats. This includes memories stored only within those chats. It also wipes files or other content protected solely by that previous PIN. OpenAI states this deletion cannot be undone. Even their support team cannot recover that protected content. If you remember your current PIN and just want to change it, you can do so without losing your conversations.
Changing your ChatGPT PIN takes a few steps:
Open ChatGPT. Go to Settings. Select Security and login. Select Account PIN. Under Change PIN, pick "Change on the web or desktop" or "Change PIN on iPhone or Android." Enter your current PIN. Create and confirm your new four-digit PIN.
Forgot your PIN? Reset it via Settings > Security and login > Account PIN. You must verify your identity. Then confirm the permanent deletion of your protected chats and associated content before creating a replacement PIN.
OpenAI restricts locking for certain conversations. Temporary Chats, archived chats, group chats, and conversations created from shared links are excluded. Chats involving scheduled tasks, meeting recordings, or background tasks also do not qualify. Conversations with responses saved as project sources face the same ban. Some Health, Codex, and Work conversations carry additional restrictions. If the "Lock chat" option does not appear, your conversation likely does not qualify.
I appreciate that OpenAI finally gives users more control over which conversations surface when someone opens ChatGPT. AI is becoming a space for processing personal decisions. Discretion matters. Handing your phone to someone without exposing an entire conversation history is a useful improvement. Yet, treat Locked Chats as a convenience and access-control feature, not a guarantee of confidentiality. The four-digit PIN keeps curious eyes away. Your broader privacy depends on the information you share and the settings you choose.
This raises a question. Should OpenAI eventually offer something stronger for conversations people consider deeply private? Would you trust ChatGPT with your most personal conversations if they were protected by a PIN? Or should OpenAI offer stronger privacy protections before you feel comfortable sharing?
