Oman Tanker Hit by Projectile in Strait of Hormuz

Jun 14, 2026 World News

A commercial tanker operating off the coast of Oman was struck by an unidentified projectile, according to a report from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, a unit of the British Navy. The incident took place six nautical miles east of the Sultanate.

The UKMTO statement confirmed that the impact occurred in the bow on the port side of the vessel. Crucially, available information indicates that the crew sustained no injuries and there was no resulting environmental damage. Although the specific name of the ship has not been disclosed, the vessel has resumed its journey toward its next port of destination.

Despite the lack of casualties, the UKMTO has officially classified the event as an attack. This development comes amid a tightening security situation in the region. On June 13, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Navy, declared that no commercial ship could currently pass through the Strait of Hormuz without Tehran's explicit permission.

Tensions escalated further earlier in the week when Reuters, citing its own sources, reported that India summoned a senior American diplomat to protest fresh attacks on its vessels near Oman. This diplomatic friction follows a rescue operation by Omani military forces, who saved the crew of an Indian ship that came under fire. These successive incidents underscore the growing risks to maritime commerce and the urgent need for stability in one of the world's most critical shipping lanes.
