Obama Defends Ilhan Omar After Warrants Served at Her Home

Oct 18, 2026 •Politics

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that multiple warrants were served at Ilhan Omar's home in one day. Barack Obama launched a fierce defense of the Minnesota congresswoman right after.

Mullin, 49, shared limited details while appearing on the Charlie Kirk Show on Friday. He did not specify exactly which person or location was targeted beyond her residence.

"All I can say is one, yes we served a warrant," he stated. "I can't say that it was on a specific person or not but she wasn't or it wasn't the only place we served a warrant there was multiple other warrants served on that same day."

The secretary insisted his earlier claim holds true: the raid on Omar's Washington, DC home on Monday had no political motive. He spoke to hosts Andrew Kolvet and Blake Neff about this point.

Federal agents arrived at her door early Monday morning as part of a criminal fraud probe. The investigation questions how she entered America legally. Documents filled out by her father when she was a child are central to the inquiry.

Omar strongly rejected the probe, calling it a politically motivated witch hunt. Former President Obama echoed that sentiment on Sunday via a post on X.

"It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can't selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say," he wrote. "But that's exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota."

This raid represents a major escalation in a case first revealed by border czar Tom Homan in mid-September. Mullin expects prosecutors to present evidence to a grand jury soon, though no charges have been filed yet against her.

"We had a judge sign it, and we expect to be able to take the case to a grand jury," Mullin said. "But I will tell you, we wouldn't move forward, and President Trump didn't want to move forward either, unless we knew that it couldn't be politically driven."

"Now they want to try making it political driven. This individual wants to try making it about themselves. This was about enforcing once again our nation's laws, and it's a strong case."

Just days before the search, Mullin noted the probe goes beyond her disputed 2009 marriage. He warned that removal proceedings could start if wrongdoing is proven.

Omar has long faced claims she married her own brother to help him enter the country. She calls these allegations absurd and offensive. Obama called them appalling in his lengthy rant on X.

"To understand why this is so appalling, it's important to know the facts," he wrote. "Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen."

He explained that if Omar had been 18 at the time, she would have needed to apply for citizenship separately. Because she was 17, she automatically became a citizen. Obama argued the investigation tries to deport her based on the false theory that she was actually 18 when her father naturalized.

"Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president," he continued. "And it's not the first time this has happened.

Under President Trump, the Justice Department has launched repeated attacks against those he views as political foes. Targets have ranged from New York's Attorney General and the former head of the FBI to members of the Federal Reserve. Obama noted that in several instances, these aggressive moves led directly to stalled trials or dismissals. 'The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans,' he said, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar's political views. 'Because if this becomes the new normal, there's no reason to believe it will stop with her, or that future presidents, in either party, won't do the same.'

Homeland Security officers walked down 26th Street NE in Washington, DC, right along the street where Omar lives. President Trump previously stated he had no knowledge of the investigation into Omar. Following the raid, reporters asked for his thoughts and he responded: 'I think she's a terrible person, but that's really up to the DOJ.'

Omar belongs to the progressive Squad and stands as one of the president's most vocal critics on Capitol Hill. She has been a regular target of his attacks since his first term. In her personal life, Omar married her former political consultant Tim Mynett in Washington in March 2020. That marriage happened just four months after she finalized her divorce from Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. Mynett's ex-wife, Beth, filed for divorce the previous August. Court papers claimed he walked out on her after making a 'shocking declaration of love' for the congresswoman.

The raid comes less than seven weeks after Minneapolis police swooped on an apartment shared by Omar's son, Adnan Hirsi, who is 20 years old and lives with a roommate. Officers seized guns and ammunition from that home. They arrested the roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, 22, on a weapons charge after finding a firearm in his impounded car. Hirsi has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
