NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Criticized for Failing to Name Suspects in Fatal Baby Shooting

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced sharp criticism after addressing the fatal shooting of a seven-month-old baby in Brooklyn without naming the suspects responsible. The victim, Kaori Patterson-Moore, was shot in her stroller while her parents and sibling were shopping for baby supplies near a Brooklyn deli around 1:20 p.m. Surveillance footage obtained by the New York Post showed the family initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the severity of the situation. Lianna Moore, the child's mother, screamed as she discovered her daughter bleeding, while Jamari Patterson, the father, carried his daughter to Woodhull Hospital seven blocks away. Blood from the shooting was visible on his hands as he ran.

Amuri Greene, 21, and Matthew Rodriguez, 18, were arrested in connection with the killing. Greene has been charged with three counts of murder, while Rodriguez was taken into custody in Pennsylvania on Friday evening. His charges remain pending. Despite these arrests, Mamdani's refusal to name the suspects sparked outrage. Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, who represents Queens, condemned the mayor's approach, writing on X: 'Literally anything but blaming the criminals who our system releases onto our streets repeatedly, over and over again, with no consequences.'

The shooting has also raised questions about gang ties. Police sources told The New York Post that the bullet may have been intended for Jamari Patterson, who is allegedly linked to the Money Over Everything gang. Greene, the alleged shooter, is said to live in Marcy Houses, a public housing unit with a long-standing feud with Bushwick Houses, where Patterson resides. However, Moore, the mother, denied any gang connections, calling the allegations 'insensitive and disturbing.'

The tragedy has left the family reeling. Moore, who described her children as 'always protected,' now demands justice. 'They deserve to stay in jail, and they don't deserve to come out after what they did to my baby,' she said on social media. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate whether the shooting was gang-related, though Patterson's mother has denied such claims. The case has reignited debates over gun control, criminal justice reform, and the systemic failures that allow violent individuals to return to streets with impunity.
