Sep 24, 2026 •World News

Nine Kazakh soldiers are dead after being swept out to sea during naval training exercises on the Caspian coast, according to the country's Defence Ministry. The tragedy occurred on Thursday in the western Mangystau region, an area that borders the vast inland waterway. A total of nineteen personnel were caught by the surge in rough waters. Nine deaths have been confirmed so far through a statement posted on Telegram. Three people made it back to shore and were rescued. Search and rescue teams are still looking for the remaining ten missing personnel as weather conditions worsened over the Caspian Sea. The accident was blamed on sudden deterioration in the forecast. Kazakhstan shares this border with Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan.
