Nicolas Cage's John Madden Impression Falls Flat in New Trailer

Oct 28, 2026 •Entertainment

The wait is nearly over. We endured the scorching heat of summer, kept our heads down, and held tight to our resolve. Now, just a few days from now, the calendar flips to November. And yes, it arrives.

Not Thanksgiving. Not the holiday season. Something arguably superior.

The John Madden biopic hits theaters on November 11. Nicolas Cage takes on the role of the late Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster. If you have ever wondered how a football figure transformed into a media personality and then into the architect of the most dominant video game franchise in history, the answer drops in roughly two weeks.

For those unable to hold their breath that long, a trailer offers a preview.

"I'm just not seeing it."

"Whoaaaaaaaaaaaa Nellie!"

Let’s be blunt. That is a miserable attempt at an impression. It barely qualifies as one. It sounds less like a performance and more like Nicolas Cage simply talking like Nicolas Cage. The effect is jarring.

Hardcore NFL fans are already piling on. Social media is flooded with the sentiment that this film is an embarrassment to Madden’s legacy. The consensus is clear: audiences are not thrilled with what they see or hear, and they fear the project will tarnish the name.

Is that overreacting? Probably. But it certainly won’t help Madden’s reputation among younger generations who never grew up watching him.

The real question remains. Why didn’t Cage bother trying to mimic the voice? There is zero effort visible in those clips.

Madden’s vocal delivery is iconic. It defined a generation. My father remembers him as a coach. I remember him as the man in the booth, dissecting plays and talking turkey during Thanksgiving week.

That was the real Madden. He was exceptional. The entire culture of the late 1990s and early 2000s revolved around making Turduckens on Thanksgiving, and John Madden was the catalyst.

Those days are gone. We will never get them back.

Madden premieres on November 11. Enjoy the ride.
