New Zealand will purchase US MH-60R helicopters for $939 million.

Oct 26, 2026 •World News

New Zealand has signed a deal with the United States government to purchase MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters, weapons, spare parts, and related equipment. The Associated Press reported this news through the nation's defense ministry.

Helicopter deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2030. These MH-60R Seahawks are designed to engage surface ships and submarines while also conducting search-and-rescue missions. They can also transport troops and cargo between vessels and shore for marine counter-terrorism operations.

Officials state that the new helicopters can operate in conjunction with Australian forces and other partner nations. Their increased speed and range enhance the capabilities of New Zealand frigates in tasks such as target detection, combat operations, and defensive maneuvers.

The total capital expenditure for this project is approximately $939 million. The average annual operating costs for the next decade are estimated at $63 million.

Germany recently requested permission from the US to manufacture large quantities of American weapons within Europe to address weapon shortages across the continent. Previous reports have highlighted challenges facing European arms manufacturers.
