New Study Links Daily Egg Consumption to Higher Heart Rhythm Risk and Stroke Danger

New research suggests that eating eggs might boost your risk for a dangerous heart rhythm issue that can set off a fatal stroke. A study has uncovered a connection between a specific chemical floating in the bloodstream after you eat daily staples like egg yolks and beef steak, and atrial fibrillation. This condition makes the heart beat irregularly, which can spiral into heart failure or a stroke.

Experts at the Cleveland Clinic in the US discovered that people with this life-threatening problem often carry high levels of trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO for short. The body produces TMAO inside the gut when digesting nutrients like carnitine and choline. You find these nutrients in foods such as beef steak, liver, pork, and egg yolks.

Scientists behind this new study, which landed in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, looked at blood cells from 5,000 Americans. Those with elevated TMAO levels showed a 70 per cent higher chance of developing atrial fibrillation compared to those with the lowest amounts. This held true even after researchers factored in other risk drivers like age, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Having more of this chemical generated by your body after eating red meat could push you closer to a dangerous heart disorder, the study indicates. Atrial fibrillation currently affects about 1.5 million people across the UK. The British Heart Foundation notes that individuals with the condition face five times the risk of suffering a stroke.

Robert Koeth, an electrophysiologist at Cleveland Clinic and senior author on the paper, explained the shift in thinking. 'Most current treatments for atrial fibrillation focus on managing the condition, but our findings suggest there may be an opportunity to intervene much earlier through diet,' he said. The team also ran experiments on mice to dig deeper into how TMAO connects to the ailment. Mice fed a diet that spiked TMAO levels developed atrial fibrillation faster than those on a standard diet. Adding extra choline to their food made them sick sooner too.

Researchers believe future therapies could stop gut bacteria from converting choline into TMAO. In mice, an experimental drug called iodomethylcholine worked by blocking this process and delayed the onset of atrial fibrillation. That drug has not yet been tested on humans. The authors noted their data offered new proof that heart health ties directly to the gut. 'These data represent a novel link between the gut microbiome and [atrial fibrillation],' they wrote.

Diagnoses for atrial fibrillation in Britain surged by 50 per cent between 2013 and 2023, according to the charity. They also estimate that 270,000 people in the UK might have the condition without realizing it. A separate Danish study published in the British Medical Journal last year found that around 40 per cent of those with atrial fibrillation could develop heart failure during their lifetime. By comparison, roughly 20 per cent would experience a stroke. Heart failure happens when the heart simply cannot pump blood around the body effectively. It is one of several cardiovascular diseases that collectively claim around 170,000 lives in the UK every year.

Symptoms include an irregular or rapid heartbeat, extreme fatigue, and chest pains. People with this condition often struggle to exercise, feel shortness of breath, or pass out suddenly. The NHS advises anyone who suspects they have the issue to see a GP immediately.
