Nearly 200 House Democrats Condemn Raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar Ahead of Election

The raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home earlier this month triggered an immediate defensive response from nearly 200 House Democrats. They are moving to shield the Minnesota congresswoman from further federal scrutiny. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., spearheaded a letter signed by 175 members of the House Democratic Caucus. The document targets Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche. The lawmakers accuse them of launching a partisan attack designed to sway the upcoming election in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.

Omar faces reelection in just one week. The timing is not accidental, according to her colleagues. The letter argues that news of the search warrant, regardless of its legal basis, could distort voter decisions. "This type of interference strips Minnesotans of their right to a free and fair election guaranteed to them under the Constitution," the group stated. They condemned the "weaponization of law enforcement" against Omar. "You have already disgraced the offices you hold," the letter declared, demanding that officials refrain from any actions affecting the election outcome.

The core of the investigation centers on allegations regarding Omar’s immigration history. Federal investigators suspect she or her father lied about her birth year on paperwork filed when her family fled Somalia in the late 1990s. The stakes depend on her age at the time. If she was 17, as previously believed, she would have automatically qualified for citizenship alongside her father. But if she was 18 or older, which federal officials now suspect, she would have been required to file her own application.

Agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant on Oct. 12. They seized multiple phones, notebooks, and other items from her residence. The Democrats’ letter recounts the allegations, noting that the probe concerns her late father’s filing of immigration paperwork after she fled Somalia’s civil war at age eight. They argue this history does not justify "a pre-dawn raid on her home for paperwork her father filed when she was a minor."

"This weaponization of law enforcement to harass a sitting Member of Congress 22 days before an election is unprecedented and unacceptable," the letter read. The lawmakers pointed out that the Department of Justice has long adhered to a policy against taking investigative steps involving a candidate this close to an election, provided delaying the action does not jeopardize the criminal investigation. They noted that Attorney General Blanche invoked this policy as recently as nine months before a previous election. The group asserts the probe is "driven by a pre-determined political outcome rather than an objective pursuit of justice."

Omar has dismissed the entire investigation as a political hit job aimed at one of President Trump’s loudest critics. She believes the raid was intended to "intimidate and scare people" from voting. The reaction from the other side is starkly different. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., called for Omar to be jailed and deported if the accusations are proven true. Fox News Digital reached out to both DHS and the Department of Justice for comment on the escalating dispute.
