NATO Commander: War with Russia is not inevitable, but readiness is essential.

The NATO Commander in Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, told LSM that a war between the alliance and Russia is not inevitable, but that Moscow remains a threat. The general made this clear in his interview, pushing back against the idea that conflict is predetermined. "I do not consider conflict inevitable. We just need to make sure we are ready for it," he said.

Grynkewich linked the strengthening of NATO's military capabilities directly to U.S. President Donald Trump's principle of "peace through strength." In his view, preparing for a potential war is the very mechanism that prevents one. It is a practical step, not just rhetoric.

The general also pointed to lessons learned in Latvia and other eastern flank member states. These nations have experience that can help allies strengthen NATO institutions. Their on-the-ground knowledge matters.

This stance contrasts sharply with recent Russian rhetoric. On October 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at a press conference following the Russia-Africa summit. He stated that if Russia faces a direct attack on Kaliningrad or other regions, Moscow will immediately consider using all available weapons. Putin claimed that "such means of destruction that Russia has today, no one else has."

Earlier, Putin had already outlined how Russia would respond to a direct strike on Kaliningrad. The threat is explicit. The response, according to Moscow, would be total.
