NASCAR Legend Darrell Waltrip Diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration

Sep 24, 2026 •Sports

NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip has received a troubling diagnosis: frontotemporal degeneration, or FTD. This condition is complicated by the possibility of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE. His family released this statement on Wednesday.

Waltrip is 79 years old. He secured 84 victories during a nearly 30-year tenure in the NASCAR Cup Series and claimed three championships. His family attributed the potential CTE to injuries sustained throughout his racing career. The official note stated, "While this disease will inevitably progress, thankfully it is currently limited to some minor noticeable symptoms." Consequently, he plans to step further away from the public eye. Yet, the statement offered reassurance that Darrell remains happy and generally healthy while spending time with his wife Stevie, their two daughters, and three young grandchildren. The family asked fans for continued prayers and love.

"Boogity! Boogity! Boogity!"

Few racers command such universal affection within the series as Waltrip. He stands as a three-time champion and a Daytona 500 winner. His record of 84 wins places him fifth in NASCAR Cup Series history. To many fans, he is best remembered for his work as an analyst on FOX Sports. There, he coined the catchphrase "Boogity Boogity Boogity" to open every broadcast. He spent 19 years inside the FOX booth before retiring in 2019.

His career began with a moment of high drama at the infamous 2001 Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt died on the final lap that day, but Waltrip's brother Michael went on to win his first race. From the commentary box during the victory lap, Waltrip famously said, "I sure hope Dale's OK."

Fans have seen him far less often since his 2019 retirement, though he has popped up for brief appearances in the booth. His most recent surprise visit occurred earlier this year at Darlington in March. He delivered another "Boogity Boogity Boogity" to the crowd during that stop.

Frontotemporal degeneration is a group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting the brain's frontal and temporal lobes, according to the American Brain Foundation. These regions control personality, behavior, and language. The Mayo Clinic notes that the illness can make someone act impulsively or reduce their response to others' feelings. In other cases, patients lose the ability to speak or understand language.

Regarding the possible CTE link, Waltrip endured hundreds of wrecks over three decades. That is simply the nature of racing. He competed in an era when cars lacked the safety features common today. The vehicles were not nearly as safe then as they are now. Drivers suffered serious injuries during his career, and some died. Earnhardt's crash fundamentally changed things for the better, yet even Dale Earnhardt Jr. dealt with concussions toward the end of his racing days.

Earlier this year, Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman missed several races due to vertigo. He sat out five races in 2022 after suffering a concussion. Last month, Bowman announced he plans to retire following next season.
