NASA rover image sparks new alien weapon claims on Mars

Jul 1, 2026 News

A peculiar object captured by NASA's Opportunity rover in 2014 has sparked fresh speculation regarding extraterrestrial life on Mars. Social media users recently revived the image, arguing the formation resembles an alien firearm resting on the Red Planet. Scott C Waring, a researcher associated with UFO Sighting Daily, contends this artifact proves the space agency deployed a rover specifically to recover alien technology. Waring posted on X that this is the sole remaining image of the weapon, suggesting others were deleted by NASA.

The alleged device, described in a blog post as roughly one foot long, is located at SOL 3773 between Mt Edgecumbe and Wdowiak Ridge. Waring admitted the discovery is incredible. The Opportunity rover itself touched down in Eagle Crater on Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. The robot ceased operations in June 2018 following a global dust storm that blinded its solar panels. NASA officially ended the mission in February 2019 after failing to re-establish contact.

Despite these claims, experts attribute the sighting to pareidolia, a psychological tendency to perceive familiar shapes in random patterns. NASA maintains there is no evidence of extraterrestrial life on the planet. Critics on X noted the object is likely just a rock. One user questioned why aliens would design weapons for human hands, while another joked about the absurdity of the theory.

Waring has spent a decade sharing such findings, including a 2016 claim of a Martian shoe. He described finding the lone item on a crater's edge, suggesting it belonged to a species engaged in ancient warfare. The original photo for that shoe was taken in 2013, though Waring circulated the image in 2016. The NASA data shows a cluster of rocks scattered across the dusty surface, with the supposed shoe visible among the rubble. Waring insists this artifact is the only remnant of a soldier lost on the battlefield, drawing parallels to newspaper photos of victims' shoes left behind after catastrophic events.
