NASA Debunks Viral Mars Alien Claims as Scientists Cite Dust

Aug 26, 2026 •News

NASA has always stated that no credible proof exists for extraterrestrial life, yet a fresh image from the Red Planet is stirring up intense debate. The shot was taken by Curiosity in 2024 and features a rocky hillside with distant peaks looming overhead. What stands out is a dark shape apparently hovering above the horizon. Curiosity has been on Mars for fourteen years now, hunting for signs that microbes might have lived there long ago. But it was this specific unexplained blob in the sky that drew fire after X user Kari Sivertzen shared it Wednesday. The post went viral fast with people claiming it proves aliens are roaming the surface.

Here is the hard truth: one single frame cannot confirm a flying craft or even a solid object exists there. It certainly wasn't the Ingenuity helicopter, which was grounded nearly 2,300 miles away in Jezero Crater at that moment. Simple physics offers better answers like airborne dust, a camera glitch, or perhaps a cosmic ray hitting the sensor. The picture itself shows Gale Crater on the lower slopes of Mount Sharp. Curiosity was driving southwest near Gediz Vallis ridge when the lens clicked on April 10, 2024. Scientists believe that ancient channel was carved by water or landslides.

Another weird find popped up in a different image this month. That one showed a distant object some called a jellyfish-like being or mechanical device. The Curiosity rover actually snapped the first mysterious photo on August 20, 2023 at roughly 6:27pm ET. It displayed a dusty landscape with rocky hills and big mountains. Yet inside that panorama sat a small figure in the left corner looking like a large black body perched atop two spindly legs.

This discovery fed speculation that NASA’s rover caught something moving across Mars. But look closer at what happened next. Images of the same area taken less than a minute earlier showed no sign of that mysterious figure whatsoever. Worse yet, the photo with the object was the very last image posted on NASA's website for that day. The next picture came nearly two hours later with the camera pointed somewhere else entirely. There were simply no other photos from August 20, 2023 uploaded by NASA to reveal if the thing kept moving, approached the rover, or vanished instantly as a glitch. Space officials call such glitches artifacts.

In September 2025, NASA announced it found the clearest signs of ancient microbial life on Mars in a sample collected by Perseverance. Yet both the space agency and the White House stand firm that no intelligent life has ever been detected. Kari Sivertzen, who reposted the image, said: 'Sometimes I spot things that catch my eye, and I share them here.' She added: 'I believe there is life on other planets, and since NASA has found potential traces of life on Mars, it's the perfect place to look.' One person replied calling it one of the best Mars UFO photographs they had ever seen. Independent researcher Jean Ward chimed in with a comment that read: 'Jellyfish-shaped UFO/UAP Spotted on Mars.

A strange shape seems to be touching down on the surface right now. One observer noted it looks like a tripod-like object. Others have drawn comparisons to those giant alien walkers from the science fiction film War of the Worlds. The distant figure stands tall and dark against the landscape. Yet, many skeptics push back hard. They argue the small black shape is nothing more than corrupted pixels in Curiosity's photo. It could just be a glitch. Or maybe it really is something else entirely waiting to be found out.
