Mother Kills Baby To Prevent Father From Raising Him
A New Mexico woman confessed to killing her eleven-month-old baby because she refused to give up parental rights to the father. Madeline Veronique Daly, who is thirty-six years old, admitted guilt this week for the death of her son Basil Daly in December 2025. The tragic event occurred weeks after a court gave emergency custody to the boy's dad while he lived in Wyoming.

Daly snatched the infant from his father and drove him to a remote section of Grant City in New Mexico. She sought shelter inside an RV at a trailer park once her ex-boyfriend reported Basil missing to police. Authorities issued a warrant for kidnapping before they began searching for her.
Law enforcement believed she knew officers were closing in on her position. According to the police affidavit, Daly shot Basil in the face with one bullet, ending his life. When questioned about her actions, the mother stated that killing her own son was worth it to prevent her ex or his family from raising him.

Jason Jordan from the Grant County Sheriff's Office penned an affidavit detailing the events. She wrote that even if life held no other value, Madeline Veronique Daly would repeat her actions just to keep her family from touching her child. When officers approached, she told them the father could not get Basil. The document added this chilling thought process right before the shooting occurred.

Daly tried to turn a firearm on herself after killing her baby, but police subdued her quickly. She admitted to murdering her 11-month-old son because she refused to share custody with the boy's father. Madeline Veronique Daly, age 36, pleaded guilty this week to the December 2025 slaying of Basil Daly. This crime happened weeks after she kidnapped him from his home in Wyoming following an emergency custody ruling for the dad.

She told investigators that shooting her son in the face was worth it to stop him from living with her former partner. The 36-year-old was arrested at the scene and held without bail before accepting a plea deal on first-degree murder charges. She now faces life in prison, with formal sentencing scheduled for a later date. Daly lost custody of Basil in November 2025 when a judge gave emergency guardianship to his father.

The boy's father reported Basil missing on November 19 after weeks without seeing his son while Daly resisted handing him over. Cops tracked her down in New Mexico after she applied for a job there, and her Wyoming kidnapping warrant surfaced during a background check. In an affidavit, Jordan noted that Daly told deputies she knew breaking the law by taking Basil but believed she kept him safe from the father and his family.
She said she decided to kidnap her son because she would not allow him to travel between Nebraska and Wyoming twice monthly. Police surrounded her trailer home in an unincorporated area near Silver City, New Mexico. When arrested, Daly claimed she saw the sheriffs and knew her time was up. She sparked a cross-state manhunt by driving Basil away from his father's Wyoming home in a truck before being caught weeks later.

When deputies heard a single gunshot from inside her RV, paramedics found Basil with a gunshot wound to the face. After the murder, she told investigators it was worth it because the boy's father would not have him. She also alleged that Basil would be in danger and molested if he stayed with her former partner. Daly claimed the boy's father never wanted anything to do with their son financially, physically, or emotionally ever.
