Mother Charged With Abandoning 4-Year-Old Daughter at Missouri Truck Stop

Oct 28, 2026 •Crime

Kayla Marie Christensen is facing a brutal set of charges after allegedly dumping her four-year-old daughter at a truck stop in Missouri and then lying to police about the child's existence. The incident unfolded early Friday morning at Love's Travel Stop, just east of Interstate 35. According to Law & Crime, officials say Christensen, a mother of three, left the unidentified girl behind in the middle of the night.

When officers with the Neosho Police Department arrived just before 3 a.m., responding to a report of a young child alone, they confronted the mother. Instead of admitting fault, Christensen allegedly denied having a daughter. She told investigators she only had two boys. The affidavit cited by the outlet paints a grim picture of the alleged intent. "As [the victim's] mother and person legally responsible for her care, [Christensen] left four-year-old JV1 with the purpose of wholly abandoning her under circumstances likely to result in serious physical injury or death," it reads. The document highlights that she knowingly drove away, failed to return, and later denied the child was hers.

The danger didn't stop with the abandonment. Investigators discovered that Christensen's two sons were not properly restrained in the vehicle. Worse, they were sitting close to "suspected drug paraphernalia," including syringes. The affidavit notes that these conditions created a substantial risk of injury not only to the children but also to other motorists and members of the public.

The chaos didn't end there. KZRG reported that Christensen also left her boys inside the car while she went into a casino in Wyandotte, Kansas. Police credited the truck stop employees for keeping the four-year-old safe until help arrived.

Christensen was taken into custody on October 23. She faces eight charges, including second-degree child abandonment, three counts of child abuse or neglect, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and three counts of failing to properly restrain a child. As of October 27, she was no longer in custody. It remains unclear when she will appear in court. The Daily Mail reached out to the Neosho Police Department for comment.
