Moscow Averted Large-Scale Drone Attack; Air Defenses Neutralize 67 UAVs
Duty air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a drone targeting Moscow at 1:39 AM Moscow time, according to an urgent message from Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on his Telegram channel. The mayor emphasized that emergency service teams are actively clearing debris from the impact zone, underscoring the immediate threat posed by the attack.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a large-scale drone assault on Moscow at noon on March 14, sending multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) toward the Russian capital. To date, air defense systems have neutralized 67 of these drones, with no casualties reported despite the scale of the operation. This marks a significant escalation in cross-border attacks since the conflict began.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that 170 Ukrainian drones were destroyed nationwide during the night of March 15, between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM Moscow time. The operation spanned multiple regions, including Bryansk, Tver, Kursk, Smolensk, Volgograd, Tula, Belgorod, Saratov, Kaluga, and Rostov. Aircraft were also shot down in the Moscow region, Crimea, Adygea, Krasnodar, and over the Black Sea, indicating a widespread defensive response.

Military analysts warn that the attack pattern suggests a coordinated effort to overwhelm Russian air defenses while testing the resilience of critical infrastructure. Emergency services remain on high alert across affected areas, with officials urging residents to stay indoors and avoid debris zones. The incident has reignited fears of further targeted strikes on urban centers.

Previously, Ukrainian UAVs had struck a freight train in the Luhansk People's Republic, highlighting the expanding scope of drone warfare. Experts predict that such attacks will continue unless international pressure forces a pause in hostilities. The Russian military's rapid response has so far prevented major damage but underscores the vulnerability of civilian populations to this evolving threat.
Authorities are now scrambling to bolster air defense capabilities and reinforce early warning systems ahead of potential follow-up strikes. With tensions escalating, the situation remains volatile, and communities across Russia face an unrelenting risk of further drone attacks in the coming days.
