Minnesota Democrats Fracture Over Ilhan Omar's Controversial Piker Appearance

Oct 26, 2026 •Politics

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is walking into a firestorm. On Monday night, she plans to share the stage with far-left streamer Hasan Piker in Minneapolis. It is eight days before the midterm elections, and the move has triggered a sharp internal rift among Minnesota Democrats. Several colleagues are begging her to pull the event. The pressure is intense.

The opposition is loud and specific. Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., labeled Piker’s rhetoric "polarizing and dangerous." She called embracing him "a mistake." Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s gubernatorial campaign was even more blunt, branding a number of Piker’s past statements "reckless and unacceptable." Other Democratic officials and party groups have taken it a step further. They are demanding that Omar and state Sen. Omar Fateh, who is hosting the sold-out show, cancel the appearance entirely.

This isn't just noise. It reveals a deep strategic fracture in the closing stretch of the race. The core question: does Piker's massive reach into younger progressives justify the political risk? Larry Jacobs, a political science professor at the University of Minnesota, told FOX 9 the event will "create a split within the DFL." He warned it could distract statewide Democrats from their final message, leaving candidates in a precarious spot with moderate and Jewish voters.

Piker commands millions of followers across social media. That influence comes with baggage. He has faced severe backlash over remarks touching on the Sept. 11 attacks, Hamas, Israel, and Jewish people. He apologized in 2019 for claiming "America deserved 9/11." He rejects labels of antisemitism, but the record remains.

Omar’s campaign stands firm. They argue Piker’s appeal is a necessary tool to mobilize the demographic Democrats are struggling to reach. "Early voting among people under 40 is down, and we need to do everything to get young people to the polls," the campaign told FOX 9. They framed the decision as a commitment to the "Big Tent" nature of the party, expressing excitement to join Fateh’s effort to drive youth turnout in this critical election.

The substance of Piker’s views is hard to ignore. On the "Pod Save America" podcast earlier this year, he stated he would "vote for Hamas over Israel every single time." He has described Orthodox Jews as "inbred." This summer brought renewed fire over a specific warning.

"People don't f--- with Israel any longer," Piker said in August. "And if Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they're singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone will come around and take action not against Israel, mind you, but against American Jews."

Fox News Digital reached out to Omar’s campaign, Fateh, and Piker for comment on the growing calls to cancel. No immediate response was received.
