Military Helicopter Crash Kills Two Pilots Near Fort Hood

Aug 26, 2026 •Crime

Two people lost their lives when a military helicopter slammed into a field in Central Texas on Wednesday, igniting a massive wildfire that forced nearby residents to flee their homes. The AH-64 Apache attack helicopter went down at approximately 1:34 pm in an open field south of Salado, located just half an hour from the US Army base at Fort Hood where it departed.

Authorities scrambled to the scene and confirmed that both pilots inside the aircraft were dead, according to Bell County Sheriff's Office spokesman Cliff Coleman. No other injuries occurred during the collision because the helicopter did not strike any buildings or people as it descended. 'It crashed into a field, and you could tell it was a violent crash,' Coleman stated at a news conference.

Officials from Fort Hood have not released the identities of the two deceased crew members yet. Brigadier General Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, explained that securing the site and supporting initial response efforts remain the immediate priority. 'Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information,' he said. The investigation into the crash is now being led by Fort Hood itself while questions linger about what may have caused the collision.

The blaze sparked by the impact quickly grew out of control, prompting local officials to close several roads and order evacuations for residents in the area. Salado Fire/Bell County ESD #1 reported that crews were battling a 'major grass fire' and warned the public that FM 2843 was impassable. 'Please avoid this roadway and choose an alternate route,' the department said in a public safety alert, urging drivers to keep traffic clear for responding emergency personnel. They also told motorists not to attempt travel through the area or circle around vehicles answering the call.

Texas A&M Forest Service responded to the scene and informed KWTX that the fire had spread across about 100 acres with zero percent containment at the time of their report. Governor Greg Abbott asked for prayers for the families of the two crew members, posting on X: 'Join Cecilia and me in prayer for their families and the entire Fort Hood community.' He added, 'Texas is forever indebted to those who serve our state and nation.' Abhiram Garapati, a Republican congressional candidate from Texas, also offered his support via Facebook. 'My prayers are with those aboard, the first responders responding to the scene and any individuals affected by the fire that began as a result of the crash,' he wrote. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
