Melania Trump Denies Epstein Ties, Calls Accusations 'Smears' as Speculation Resurfaces

Melania Trump's recent public denials of any connection to Jeffrey Epstein have reignited a firestorm of speculation, drawing attention to long-standing rumors about her past. In a tightly scripted address from the White House on Thursday, the First Lady categorically rejected allegations that she had any meaningful ties to the disgraced financier, calling the claims "smears" aimed at tarnishing her reputation. She did not name the individuals or groups she accused of spreading the rumors, but her speech was a clear attempt to distance herself from Epstein, whose legacy is inextricably linked to sex trafficking and financial impropriety. The timing of her remarks—just months after the release of the Epstein Files by the Department of Justice—suggests a deliberate effort to counter a wave of unverified information that had resurfaced in the wake of the documents' disclosure.

The Epstein Files, which included millions of emails and other records, contained a 2002 message from Melania to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate, that read: "Dear G! How are you? Nice story about JE in NY mag. You look great on the picture. I know you are very busy flying all over the world. How was Palm Beach? I cannot wait to go down. Give me a call when you are back in NY. Have a great time! Love, Melania." The email, which was part of a broader trove of communications implicating Epstein in a global network of exploitation, was one of 124 mentions of Melania's name in the files. However, most of these references were either duplicates or passing mentions in Epstein's inbox or in news articles, as noted by experts analyzing the documents. Melania's defenders argue that such appearances do not imply guilt or association, but the mere existence of the message has fueled persistent questions about her relationship with Epstein and Maxwell.

The New York Magazine article referenced in the 2002 email, titled "Jeffrey Epstein: International Moneyman of Mystery," was a pivotal moment in Epstein's public persona. It featured a photo of Epstein alongside Bill Clinton at a private jet event, as well as an image of Melania and Donald Trump chatting with Ingrid Seynhaeve, a Belgian supermodel, at a Victoria's Secret party. The article framed Epstein as a shadowy figure with ties to the elite, and the inclusion of Melania in the piece—though brief—has since been scrutinized for its potential implications. In her speech, Melania insisted that her correspondence with Maxwell was merely a polite gesture, not an indication of any friendship or complicity. She emphasized that she met Donald Trump "by chance at a New York City party in 1998," directly countering allegations that Epstein had introduced them.

The Epstein Files also included an unverified account from an unnamed model who claimed in a 2019 FBI interview that Epstein had introduced Melania to Donald Trump. The model, who worked for a modeling agency in New York in 2006, stated that Epstein had facilitated the meeting, though no evidence was provided to corroborate the claim. This account, while unproven, has further complicated the narrative surrounding Melania's relationship with Epstein. Meanwhile, another email from November 2016, sent to Epstein from a redacted sender, mentioned a personal encounter with Melania and Donald Trump, including a reference to Trump's comment about her being "a hot piece of ass." Such fragments, though not definitive proof of wrongdoing, have contributed to the public's enduring fascination with the First Lady's past.

Melania's defiant speech on Thursday underscored her determination to control her narrative, even as the Epstein Files continue to surface new details. Her assertion that she had no connection to Epstein or Maxwell has been met with skepticism by some, who argue that the sheer volume of references in the files suggests a level of engagement that cannot be dismissed outright. Yet, her defenders highlight that context is crucial—many of the documents are circumstantial, and no evidence has been presented to link her to Epstein's alleged crimes. As the debate over her past continues, the implications for the Trump administration remain unclear. While Melania's focus on distancing herself from Epstein may be a personal priority, the broader impact on public trust in the First Family and the administration's handling of such controversies could have lasting consequences. The episode also raises questions about the role of media and the justice system in shaping narratives around high-profile individuals, even as the line between speculation and substantiated claims remains blurred.

Nuts.

As with many of the millions of documents released from the Epstein Files, Melania's name being found in documents is not an indication of wrongdoing. Several references include newspaper clippings or screenshots of media outlets. In one example, a Daily Mail article about Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre was seen in a screenshot from Epstein's computer—with Melania mentioned in a separate article headline on the same website. As with many of the millions of documents released from the Epstein Files, Melania's name being found in documents is not an indication of wrongdoing, and is often merely a reference to her name being cited—including above where her name was on a separate article headline on the Daily Mail homepage.

In her speech on Thursday, Melania also slammed the prevalence of fake images of herself with Epstein, as she told the public to "be cautious about what you believe." These images and stories are completely false. I'm not a witness or unnamed witness in connection with any of Epstein's crimes," she said. The First Lady did not detail which "fake images" were floating, however her name in the Epstein Files sparked a wave of altered and fictitious pictures of her with Epstein to circulate social media. This included one showing Epstein giving Melania a kiss on the cheek and embracing her behind a desk, which spread across social media earlier this year.

Other mentions to Melania in the Epstein Files included a diary entry showing she and Epstein appeared to be on a list of dinner party guests for an event held by businessman William Astor. Another file contained a Tatler article about Maxwell which included an image of Melania partying with Maxwell, Trump and supermodel Naomi Campbell in New York City in 2002. In one filing from 2019, an alleged Epstein victim told investigators that she had met the sex trafficker in 2000, who then introduced her to Trump and Melania. The alleged victim said she was flown to Epstein's Florida mansion by private jet in 2002 and taken to Mar-a-Lago where she met the presidential couple and "shook hands with Trump and his wife Melania."

A separate email from 2017 showed that the financier told journalist Michael Wolff in that "some journalists (are) working on a lead on a Melania boyfriend." There is no evidence to support this claim from Epstein's email. Another email contained a woman's claim to investigators that she met Melania and Barron Trump in 2016 through her role as a tutor. She claimed she heard someone close to the First Lady "dish" about her marriage to the president negatively.

The tranche of documents released by the DOJ also feature an alleged victim's explosive claim that he was raped by Epstein during a yacht trip in 2000 which Trump and Melania were also present on. There is no evidence to support this and neither has been formally accused of wrongdoing. Another 2018 email from journalist Michael Wolff to Epstein appeared to show him referring to the Stormy Daniels controversy, which he described as Trump's "Achilles heel." He wrote that Melania was "focused on the dates" surrounding Trump's alleged tryst with the porn star—which he denies—saying that Melania was figuring out if it was "before the birth of Barron or after."

Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts related to hush payments to porn star Stormy Daniels after a seven-week trial in May 2024. The Daily Mail has contacted the White House for comment.
