Matador Paco Ureña Severely Gored by Bull in Madrid Arena

Jun 2, 2026 Sports

In a harrowing display of violence at the Las Ventas arena in Madrid, a matador named Paco Ureña was severely gored by a bull. The footage captures the terrifying moment the animal's horns hooked under his right arm, tossing him into the air before he crashed to his knees. The crowd gasped in horror as the beast then caught his left leg, lifting him once more before he finally hit the floor.

Despite the danger, Ureña had been skillfully guiding the bull with his cape and leaping back to avoid the charging animal. However, the bull's momentum was too great, and it nearly trampled him until assistants known as cuadrillas intervened. These brave men covered the bull's eyes with their capes, allowing Ureña a critical window to escape the immediate threat. He was later seen hobbling away with a deep wound, which local media reports identified as a 30cm goring to his leg.

This incident follows another tragic event last month involving top matador Alberto Duran, 36. During the Copa Chenel tournament in Valdemoro, Duran was gored in the groin while performing before hundreds of spectators. The bull reared up, thrusting the fighter into the air as audience members recoiled in shock. Duran managed to run away, but he was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery on his testicles.

Medical complications arose after the initial operation, as doctors discovered a blood clot in one of Duran's legs. This discovery forced him to undergo a second, urgent procedure to ensure his recovery. The repeated injuries highlight the extreme physical risks inherent in bullfighting, a sport where even brief moments of misfortune can lead to life-altering consequences for the participants.
