Massive Fire and Explosion Engulf Quaker Oats Factory in Iowa
Emergency crews scrambled to a Quaker Oats factory in Iowa as a massive fire consumed the building on Saturday evening. Dramatic video footage quickly spread online, capturing a daunting black smoke plume rising over Cedar Rapids while flames ravaged the structure.
Cedar Rapids Police and Fire dispatched units at 4:45pm EST and found clear evidence of an explosion followed by intense burning. After roughly forty-five minutes of work, officials confirmed that every plant worker had been accounted for safely. The Battalion Chief's office described the situation to the Daily Mail as dynamic and ongoing around 6pm.

By 7pm, firefighters reported no injuries or fatalities. The department shared a video on X showing the building badly damaged with one side covered in black ash. Emergency responders gathered around the facility as the sun set behind them. First responders were seen preparing a stretcher that appeared unused throughout the operation.
It remains unclear what caused the explosion and how severe the final damage will be. Witnesses told local ABC affiliate KCRG they felt an explosion before seeing the thick black smoke rising from behind the Quaker Oats facility. A spokesperson for PepsiCo Foods US, which owns Quaker Oats, confirmed to the Daily Mail that a fire broke out at their site and said details about how it started would be investigated further.

'We can confirm all employees are accounted for and we are grateful to the first responders who continue to operate at the facility to control the fire,' the spokesperson added. Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell stated in a video message that the blaze began in an area where product is moved, meaning no employees were nearby when it started.
She noted the heavy presence of firefighters, adding: 'This is what these folks train for every day. How grateful we are to have them here.' The mayor explained that the explosion site was not heavily populated by staff and that firefighters quickly got the fire under control. Local hospitals supported the emergency response effort but ultimately needed no patients because everyone remained safe.

O'Donnell emphasized that Quaker Oats is an iconic brand and holds significant importance for Cedar Rapids residents. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley wrote on X that he was alerted to the fire immediately and said he is praying for the safety of those in or near the building as well as for the first responders on the scene.
Representative and Senate candidate Josh Turek issued a statement: 'Praying for all the workers, the first responders on scene, and everyone nearby at the Quaker Oats factory in Cedar Rapids right now.' Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson added that she is praying everyone stays safe at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. She thanked the first responders working to put out the fire and keep the community safe while noting her office stands ready to assist in any way possible.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department managed to account for all employees at the plant in under an hour after the initial report arrived. Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, prompting a massive first response effort from multiple agencies. The Quaker Oats facility is no stranger to flames according to local reports.
Smoke billowed from machinery last year, forcing staff to flee and sending one worker to a hospital. KCRG covered that incident back then.

Firefighters arrived at the site in 2018 after something inside an oven ignited. Smoke filled the tenth floor of the building, CBS 2 Iowa noted.
The American Cereal Company facility in Cedar Rapids blew up a year before it adopted the Quaker Oats name. Two employees died in that disaster.

Investigators found spontaneous combustion triggered the blast. They tore down the ruins and rebuilt the plant in 1905.
The Daily Mail is asking local officials for more details on what happened.
