Maryland Marine veteran disarms robber with military training in real time

Jun 7, 2026 Crime

A Maryland Marine veteran was forced to apply his military training in real-time when four hooded teenagers attempted a robbery and escalated the situation by drawing a firearm. Jheyco Borda, 35, was performing maintenance on his truck in Oxon Hill on Wednesday afternoon when the group approached him at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Surveillance video captured the chilling moment one of the youths reached into his pocket and produced a gun, pointing it directly at Borda. Borda, speaking to Telemundo44, recalled seeing six children initially playing around before they stepped in front of his vehicle. "I saw them put on a face mask. As soon as I figured that one out, I was like, something's about to go down," he said.

The armed teen demanded Borda's phone and informed him that the truck was running with the keys inside. "I gave [my phone] to him. When he got distracted looking at my phone, that was the split second when I grabbed the gun out of his hand," Borda explained. The footage clearly shows Borda lunging forward to disarm the attacker, sparking an immediate commotion on the street as he wrestled the weapon from the teenager's grip.

Borda's brother, who is currently preparing to enlist in the Air Force, sprinted out to assist in disarming the suspect. While two of the other teens retreated from the initial brawl, a fourth circled around the truck to join the scuffle. Together, the two brothers managed to overpower the group. "We are trained to fight or flight and it was my instinct in a split second," Borda told WUSA 9. "Every split second counts a lot, and they teach us that in there."

During the struggle, the gun discharged, leaving a bullet hole in the side of Borda's truck, though fortunately, no one was injured. The brothers held the suspects down until officers from the Prince George's County Police Department arrived on the scene. According to Fox 5, all four teenagers were subsequently taken into police custody. Borda emphasized that his Marine service allowed him to act quickly and trust his instincts in a life-threatening situation. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Prince George's County Police Department for further comment on the incident.
