Mary Peltola Rejects Kamala Harris's Endorsement Request

Aug 26, 2026 •US News

Mary Peltola has slapped down a request from Kamala Harris for an endorsement ahead of the Alaska Senate race. The aspiring congresswoman is stepping into one of two seats in that state for next November's midterms, but she made it clear she did not want to be tied to the failed 2024 presidential ticket. A spokesperson for Peltola told The New York Times that her candidate never sought support from anyone outside Alaska and that her focus remains strictly on home turf. That stance came after a fundraising email from Harris suggested Peltola could flip the state and give Democrats control of the Senate.

The math does not work out in Peltola's favor if you look at 2024 numbers. Kamala Harris lost Alaska by thirteen points back then, yet Republicans are now using that same endorsement to try and hurt her chances. Nick Puglia, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, argued that Peltola worked hand in hand with Harris to put Alaska last during her time as a House member from 2022 until 2025. He noted it makes sense then that Harris would back her now. Rebecca Himschoot, an Independent lawmaker in the state legislature, called the move really dumb. She told The Times that Harris is riding Mary Peltola's coattails even though she is not running for anything yet and performed poorly here to begin with.

Peltola has positioned herself as a centrist Democrat campaigning on fish, family, and freedom. She did not endorse Harris for president in 2024. Polls indicate she stands a strong chance of becoming Alaska's first Democratic senator since 2014. The primary field is crowded with sixteen candidates split between seven Republicans, three Democrats, three Independents, plus one Libertarian, one Green candidate, and one member of the Alaska party. Only four winners will move on to the general election because of state rules.

Ten out of eleven polls currently forecast Peltola as a winner, though a New York Times/Siena poll predicts incumbent Dan S. Sullivan will hold his seat. Confusion is already brewing because another Republican named Daniel J. Sullivan is running for the same chair. This mix-up scares GOP leaders who worry voters might confuse the two men and cost Dan S. his job. President Trump's unpopular war in Iran could also help Peltola unseat him. Alaska leans conservative but its voters have an independent streak that often defies party lines. Republican Lisa Murkowski, the other state senator, backed Peltola during her previous runs for the House despite their opposing parties. She has supported Dan S.

Kamala Harris faces a fresh hurdle as she seeks support for this year's Senate race. President Trump's growing unpopularity over his war in Iran now acts like a direct gift to the Peltola campaign. This dynamic could ultimately help her flip the seat away from Democrats. The Daily Mail has reached out to Harris for comment on how she responds to Peltola rejecting her endorsement.
