Markle Denies Ex-Wife Sent Abuse Letter, Calls Story a Set-Up

Oct 25, 2026 •Entertainment

A letter handed to the Metropolitan Police accusing Thomas Markle of child sex abuse appears to have been sent by his ex-wife. Roslyn Loveless was married to the Duchess of Sussex's estranged father from 1964 until 1975. The New York Post claims she filed the report in 2019 detailing these allegations against him.

Last night, Mr Markle told The Mail on Sunday he did not believe Ms Loveless had sent that letter. She died in 2024. He said the story felt like a set-up to him. Reacting to the notion that his first wife might have written it, he stated: 'This shocks me. I'm not buying it. Roslyn and I broke up years ago but I was good to her in the divorce.'

'I find it hard to believe she would write a letter like that,' he added. 'She was a really bad alcoholic. It's really sad but she would never have written something like that letter without someone making suggestions to her. She had really bad alcohol problems for years.' He feels this is part of an effort to discredit him after his death, noting she cannot speak out now because she is gone.

Mr Markle confessed to paying for sex in the Philippines while denying he slept with underage girls. Authorities there are investigating the former Hollywood lighting technician for allegedly hoarding child sex images. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., turned over those images to police last week after finding them on computers left behind when his father returned to the US earlier this year.

The Met faced questions about why it sat on the letter raising alarm over these allegations for more than seven years. Meghan initially said she learned of the accusations in 2018 from a letter passed to her by Met detectives, but the force has since said it actually alerted her a year later. She had been 'given assurances' that the matters were being investigated.

She added that the allegations against her father are 'more sickening than one could ever imagine'. Her thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. Mr Markle has strongly denied these claims since The Sun revealed he was under investigation in the Philippines. He vowed to do whatever it takes to clear his name after being accused of such sickening crimes.

I will never speak to my father again unless I am summoned to testify against him." That was the stark warning from Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother, who says he discovered boxes containing child abuse material at his own home in the Philippines. He reported those findings to police, sparking a formal investigation into allegations against his father. Mr Markle, pictured with nurse Rio Canedo, is now the center of this disturbing probe after being taken seriously by authorities following his son's disclosure.

On Friday, speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Mr Markle rejected the claims as "sick lies." He admitted feeling "very upset" that his own child had come forward with these accusations. His half-sister, Samantha Loveless, 61, stood firmly by her father and turned the narrative back on Thomas Jr., accusing him of inventing the whole story for money. She told reporters this week: "There is no merit in these disgusting allegations whatsoever and my brother is disgusting for making them up. He wants to destroy our dad. Shame on him."

The family tree gets complicated here. Mr Markle and Ms Loveless shared Samantha before Thomas Jr. entered the picture with Doria Ragland in 1981, eventually fathering Meghan. His marriage to Meghan's mother lasted from 1979 until 1987, ending when their daughter was about two years old. The split came early for a family that would later be watched by millions.

Tensions flared again after Prince Archie was born in May 2019. Ms Loveless told the press her ex-husband was an "awful father" who should never have been allowed near his grandson. She argued Meghan "would be a fool to have him in her life," insisting he had repeatedly shown her side of the family that he could not be trusted. "She must know that now," she said. "I speak not out of bitterness, my life moved on many years ago, but out of concern. Archie deserves to be brought up in a happy home, not in this vengeful situation that has been created." She questioned what made him think he could ever be a great grandfather when his record as a father was so poor.

At the time, Mr Markle dismissed his ex-wife's harsh words as "not valid." Meanwhile, headlines popped up everywhere: one claimed he confessed to paying for sex in the Far East but denied being a child abuser; another noted the Metropolitan Police were under fire for failing to share what they called "disturbing" claims with the FBI. Yet another piece reported how Thomas Jr. and his father tried to rebuild their lives in the Philippines after years of furious arguments tore them apart.
