Marbella Beach Panic Ended When Shark Was Revealed As Injured Tuna

Aug 26, 2026 •World News

Panic swept through Ancon Beach on Marbella's Golden Mile as swimmers scrambled away from what looked like a monster shark. The water churned near the shore while huge fish thrashed violently in shallow depths. From far off, the creature certainly mimicked a predator, sending one beachgoer sprinting to escape it. Others ignored the danger and ran toward the splashing mass just to catch a glimpse.

The swimmer who had that terrifying close call remains unidentified this morning. His nationality was never confirmed. But the scene captured on camera told a different story once everyone stopped running. The beast was not a shark at all. It was a 650lb tuna caught in terrible trouble. The water around it turned bright red as blood flowed from its gills. Witnesses believe fishing gear or a jet-ski strike caused the injury that left it gasping for air near land.

Local resident Camilo Orosa watched the chaos unfold and offered his honest take on the fear gripping the crowd. 'My God, if it were me, I would already have s*** my pants, or rather my swimming trunks,' he said. Another viewer chimed in from social media with equal shock. 'If I was that swimmer I would have died from a heart attack. It looks like a shark.' They even noted the silence of the ocean around it. All that was missing was the music from Jaws, they joked about the classic 1975 thriller by Steven Spielberg.

Jade Bloomberg, a British expat who runs an electric water sports and wellness company in Marbella, dove right into the mix to check on the giant fish. 'It was in so much distress,' she explained. She went in to see if it was tangled in a net or had something inside but found nothing. The animal was huge, yet beautiful even in its agony. Once people realized the threat was fake and the creature needed help instead of fear, the crowd turned on a new plan. Using sun beds and deck chairs, beachgoers physically pushed the wounded tuna back toward deeper water where it could survive.

Another social media user weighed in with their own theory on how this happened to such a common visitor. 'That poor tuna must have had some kind of collision with a jet ski or something similar,' they wrote. Tuna hanging out near the coast is normal behavior for these creatures. Sometimes people mistake them for dolphins, but today the confusion turned into a rescue mission. The water was filled with red blood and frantic movement until humans stepped in to save a life that looked like death itself.
